Red White Sparkling Rosé Spirits GiftsLearn about Colombard — taste profile, popular regions and more …
Colombard is a large-berried white grape originating in Southwest France. A cross between Chenin Blanc and Gouais Blanc, it is grown in Cognac and Armagnac for distillation into Brandy. Southwest France, California and South Africa produce light, dry, inexpensive bottles noted for their refreshing quality.
Tasting Notes for Colombard
As a dry white wine, Colombard shows high acidity and pleasant green apple, citrus, white peach, almond and lemongrass characteristics. Having a high pulp-to-skin ratio, Colombard can produce a fairly neutral wine which makes it suitable for Cognac and Armagnac production.
Food Pairings for Colombard
Colombard is a natural warm-weather sipper, making it pair easily with fresh-water white fish, sushi, salads, light chicken preparations and mild soft cheeses.
Sommelier Secrets for Colombard
Gouais Blanc, a widely planted “peasant” grape in Medieval France and one of Colombard’s parents, imparts strong hybrid vigor when crossed with other varieties. In fact, Gouais Blanc is also a lineal ancestor of such royal grapes as Riesling, Chardonnay and Gamay.
