Winemaker Notes

Somehow Hyde Vineyard always seems to deliver a Pinot Noir that has it all. From its dynamic energy to it delicate ethereal side to its layered complexity and pure varietal character, there is a completeness to this wine that marks a grand-cru-caliber vineyard. Elegant and layered, the nose dances and weaves through aromas of dried rose petal, carnation, cranberry, clove, cherry, dark chocolate and damp earth. Though soft and supple, the palate is equally multifaceted, with fine-grained tannins supporting flavors of cassis, cherry liqueur and cinnamon. Mouthwatering acidity brings precision to the red fruit flavors while adding brightness and focus to the finish.

RP 94
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
A brilliant wine, the 2014 Pinot Noir Hyde Vineyard, utilizes about 10%-15% whole-clusters and 60% new French oak before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. Most of this vineyard is planted with Hyde Pinot Noir selections, including Calera. The vineyard was planted in 1979, but Patz & Hall used two older blocks among the 44 distinct parcels Hyde possesses. This dark ruby/plum colored wine offers up notes of baking spices, black and red currants, sweet cherry and porcini mushroom. Some earth is present, and the wine is classic Pinot Noir with light tannin and a medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, impressive focus and equilibrium. Drink it over the next 7-8 years.

James Suckling
Aromas of dried strawberry, flowers, and almonds. Some smoky undertones. Medium to full body, pinpointed and linear with a finish that goes to the tip of your tongue. Energetic. Drink now.

Wine Enthusiast
From the legendary Hyde, a source since 1996, this vintage continues the greatness of the prior years, showing depths of fresh dirt and spice. Stewy damson plum, blackberry and black cherry provide succulent complex, ripe flavors accented in vanilla and cinnamon. The acidity is mouthwatering.
WS 92
Wine Spectator
Presents a charming, supple mix of plum, black cherry, rose petal and raspberry, shaded by hints of baking spices and light cedary oak. Still a bit edgy, but should smooth out.

As early as the 1970s Carneros became known as a source of terrific Pinot Noir, and was one of the first California regions to gain such a reputation. The combination of sunny days, cooling fog and thin clay soils are tailor-made for the variety. Another factor in Pinot Noir’s prominent place here is vintners’ willingness to experiment widely. The history of the grape in Carneros is marked by continuous research into clonal variations, viticultural techniques and site selection. Careful evaluation over time has revealed a signature flavor profile as well. Complex aromas and flavors of cherry, red berry, spice, earth and cola appear time and again in Carneros Pinot Noir. To this day the appellation remains one of California’s standard bearers for the variety.
