    Winemaker Notes

Temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel. No wood aging. Estate-bottled. A graceful and subtle example of the finest dry white wines of the Loire Valley. The word "fumé" means smoky in French, and refers to the hallmark flinty fragrance in the region's wines - a characteristic amply evident in the Domaine de St. Laurent-l'Abbaye Pouilly-Fumé. A sophisticated choice to serve with any fine fish or shellfish, especially those which include light, creamy sauce.

Located in the village of Les Berthiers, six miles southeast of Sancerre. Two distinct vineyards cover 120 acres: the hillside St. Laurent plot with a soil of clay and chalk; and the sloping Chailloux section with a soil of clay and flint. In the upper Loire since 1630, the Chatelains have been vineyard owners and wine makers for eleven generations. Jean-Claude Chatelain and his son Vincent make their wine in an ultramodern cellar underneath the family's house.
