Winemaker Notes

The 2009 OVID Napa Valley is seamlessly layered with aromas of mulberry, fresh boysenberry, roasted chestnuts and Sandalwod, and wonderfully dense with a rich, precise core of polished tannins. We think you'll be able to taste the radiance of the season that made this wine, whether you drink it now or 20 years from now.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2009 Ovid is stunningly beautiful. At times it shows a little more depth, power and richness than the Hexameter, but both wines are compelling. Endless layers of fruit saturate the palate as this rich, intense wine conquers the heart and intellect. A totally vivid wine, the 2009 is even more impressive from bottle than it was from barrel. Over the time I followed it, the 2009 gained finesse and elegance in the glass, which bodes quite well for the future. Intense graphite, crushed rocks and pencil shaving nuances add energy to the polished, huge finish. The blend is 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Cabernet Franc, 8% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2029.

Wine Enthusiast
With a beautiful purple color, this wine quickly exhibits classic Cabernet aromas of black currants and cedar. In the mouth, it's full bodied and concentrated, showing powerful, sweet blackberry fruit. It's incredibly refined, impressively structured, massive, impeccable and frankly delicious. This should develop over the next 20 years, at least.

Wine Spectator
Gorgeous aromas, plump and generous, lead to ripe, rich, juicy plum and black cherry flavors that show touches of cedar, fresh earth, black licorice and spice. Gains momentum and finesse, with a long, subtle, detailed finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2014 through 2026.

Vinous
Bright, full, deep ruby. Very sexy, musky nose conveys liqueur-like ripeness to the aromas of black fruits, licorice, menthol and minerals; a faint leesy quality adds nuance without distracting from the fruit. Plush, sweet, highly concentrated and seamless; this wine was a bit strict in the early going but today it really captures the creamy side of this vintage. Perhaps most impressive on the slowly building finish, which features suave tannins and a firming touch of graphite minerality. Really expands on the palate with air.

OVID, California
OVID Ovid Vista Winery Image

OVID is an organically farmed, 15-acre vineyard perched on a secluded mountaintop at 1,400 ft. elevation in the western reaches of the Pritchard Hill geography of Napa Valley. Here, they farm rocky red, volcanic soils to capture a true sense of place and craft long lived wines composed of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. They ferment only with native yeasts and bottle their wines without fining or filtering.

The Winemaker since 2006, Austin Peterson, combines his site-specific experience with a sense of experimentation, embracing a tension between classical and cutting-edge winemaking methods.

The name was inspired by the Roman poet Publius Ovidius Naso [Ovid], whose METAMORPHOSES, a poetic retelling of the Greek myths, celebrates themes of transformation and change.

Undoubtedly proving its merit over and over, Napa Valley is a now a leading force in the world of prestigious red wine regions. Though Cabernet Sauvignon dominates Napa Valley, other red varieties certainly thrive here. Important but often overlooked include Merlot and other Bordeaux varieties well-regarded on their own as well as for their blending capacities. Very old vine Zinfandel represents an important historical stronghold for the region and Pinot noir is produced in the cooler southern parts, close to the San Pablo Bay.

Perfectly situated running north to south, the valley acts as a corridor, pulling cool, moist air up from the San Pablo Bay in the evenings during the hot days of the growing season, which leads to even and slow grape ripening. Furthermore the valley claims over 100 soil variations including layers of volcanic, gravel, sand and silt—a combination excellent for world-class red wine production.
