Merry Edwards Meredith Estate Pinot Noir 2012 Front Label

Winemaker Notes

This Pinot's initial display is packed with cool-area fraise du bois, blueberry, boysenberry and stone fruits. The intense fragrance is seamlessly interwoven with cassis, chanterelle mushroom, nutmeg and oolong tea. Scents of roses and wildflower blossoms waft through this vivid fabric, adding even more vibrancy. The palate starts out rather supple and smooth, revealing its true power once it builds to a rich, full, extended finish.

Professional Ratings

  • 92
Silky in blueberry and boysenberry fruit, this is a balanced Pinot, tending toward black and blue fruit over red, with a bouquet of rose petals and truffled earth. With just a sprinkling of cinnamon and nutmeg, it develops spiciness on the palate, finishing light and bright.
  • 92
Classically proportioned, pure, firm, rich and juicy, with aromas of violet and wilted rose amid vivid blueberry, wild berry, raspberry, cedar and crushed rock notes. This is both firm and dense, gaining depth and persistence, with a long, tapered finish. Drink now through 2023.

While the Russian River Valley is a large appellation with multiple climate zones and soil types, it is best known for cool-climate varieties, with Pinot Noir as the most celebrated. The grapes benefit from a reliable late afternoon flow of Pacific Ocean fog through the Petaluma Gap and along the Russian River Valley that ensures slow and steady ripening and the preservation of grape acidity. Today many of California’s most highly regarded Pinot Noir vineyards are in the Russian River Valley, along with its sub-appellation, Green Valley.

Historically Russian River Valley Pinot Noirs had bright red fruit and delicate earthy, mineral notes. But changes in viticultural and winemaking practices have led to stylistic changes in some of the region’s wines. Adjustments to canopy management, among other techniques, have resulted in riper fruit and bolder wines as well. These show flavors of black cherry, blackberry, cola, spice and darker, loamy earth tones, accenting traditional Pinot Noir notes of strawberry, raspberry and light cherry.
