Love the aromas of cedar, light vanilla, dark berry and plums. Full body, with layered tannins and and a beautiful mouth-feel. Lingers for minutes. The is a subtle and complex. Mastrojanni is getting better and better. Better than 2006.
The 2007 Brunello di Montalcino is a big wine loaded with personality. Sweet dark cherries, licorice, smoke and leather burst from the glass in this explosive, rich Brunello. Layers of flavor develop with air, filling out the wine’s broad-shouldered frame very nicely. Firm tannins support the generous finish. This is a fabulous showing from Mastrojanni. The Brunello was fermented in cement and aged cask for 36 months. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2027.
Here's a dark, austere expression of Brunello, with layers of exotic spice, toasted nut, cardamom and forest underbrush. Small berry fruit comes through as raspberry and black currant. In the mouth, the wine is bright, defined and firm, showing solid tannic structure.
Cherry and plum fruit is locked up within the firm, slightly hard-edged structure in this red, causing the wine to come off as angular and austere. But there's a core of sweet fruit and a long finish.
Intertwining iridescent geologies: clays, millenary cobblestone debris, tuffs and sandstones. The strong salinity of the ground and the temperature range must be carefully understood. The climate is influenced by Mount Amiata, an ancient extinct volcano that stands high above the horizon with its 1 mile height. The estate stretches over 240 acres, 80 of which are cultivated with vines, 42 for Brunello, with vineyards from 8 to 41 years old. The altitude of the vineyards varies from 620 to 1340 feet high. The vine exposure is towards the south-east, with more and less steep slopes.
Sangiovese dominates in the vineyard, being the absolute protagonist of Mastrojanni wines. It is present in the Brunello, the Rosso, in the cru Loreto and in the cru Schiena d’Asino; the latter produced only in extraordinary vintages. With a pinch of imagination and fun, the winery created a "Supertuscan" IGT San Pio, a harmonious blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese. To conclude with a sweet ending, the Moscadello of Montalcino late harvest Botrys, their golden nectar, a blend of Muscat, Malvasia di Candia and Sauvignon Blanc.

A legendary wine region setting the benchmark for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay worldwide, Burgundy is a perennial favorite of many wine lovers. After centuries of winemaking, the Burgundians have determined precisely which grape clone grows best on which plot of land, determined by the soil type, the elevation, and the angle in relation to the sun—this is a region firmly rooted in tradition and the concept of ‘terroir’ reigns supreme here. Because of the Napoleonic Code requiring equal distribution of property and land among all heirs, vineyard ownership in Burgundy is extremely fragmented, with some growers responsible for just one row or even one vine. This system has led to the predominance of the "negociant"—a merchant who purchases fruit from many different growers to vinify and bottle together.
Burgundy’s cool, marginal climate and Jurassic limestone soils are perfect for the production of elegant, savory, and mineral-driven Chardonnay and Pinot Noir with plenty of acidity. Vintage variation is of particular importance here, as weather conditions can be variable and unpredictable. Spring frost and hail are near-universal risks. The Côte d’Or, a long and narrow escarpment, forms the heart of the region, split into the Côte de Nuits to the north and the Côte de Beaune to the south. The former is home to many of the world’s finest Pinot Noir wines, while Chardonnay plays a much more prominent role in the latter, though outstanding red, white, and rosé are all produced throughout. Other key appellations include the Côte Chalonnaise, home to great value Pinot Noir and sparkling Crémant de Bourgogne; the Mâconnais, producing soft and round inexpensive Chardonnay; and Chablis, the northernmost region of Burgundy and an acidity-lover’s Chardonnay paradise.
