Winemaker Notes

The "Champs de Cri" is an important parcel of 2.3 hectares known in Les Loges as the site that produces the most elegant and long-lived of the wines of this appellation. Deschamps' holdings are exclusively old vines with an average age of 55 years (as of 2012). Out of respect for the complexity and depth of this wine, Deschamps leaves this wine in contact with the lees for several months more than his other cuvées and it is released for sale later than the other wines of the estate. It is frequently marked by notes of bitter orange, jasmine and beeswax.

The nose disclosed most of all the extreme deep mineral foundation of this Fumé with subtle hints of citrons, bitter orange, straw, jasmine and elder flowers. On the palate this is a full-bodied, rich, concentrated and multilayered Pouilly-Fumé of great elegance and expression. It’s an aristocratic, extremely well-balanced, fresh and lingering monolith of natural beauty. Range: 94+

Sometimes, I'd like say, "It's complicated." When someone asks me to describe a wine. In reality the 2012 Marc Deschamps Pouilly-Fumé Les Champs de Cri, when all is said and done, is a pretty fine wine with the intricate nuances. Invites linguine with clams. Deep yellow in color; the aromas starts out closed-in but definite in the classic Old World style; with aeration, comes hard candy and mineral, maybe even some chalk, doesn't hit you like a ton of bricks, this one just brings you into the fold; medium bodied, and perky on the palate; nicely developed flavors of dried citrus and chalk, perhaps a hint of savory herbs; long and frisky in the finish. Capable of a vast array of styles, Sauvignon Blanc is a crisp, refreshing variety that equally reflects both terroir and varietal character. Though it can vary depending on where it is grown, a couple of commonalities always exist—namely, zesty acidity and intense aromatics. This variety is of French provenance. Somm Secret—Along with Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc is a proud parent of Cabernet Sauvignon. That green bell pepper aroma that all three varieties share is no coincidence—it comes from a high concentration of pyrazines (herbaceous aromatic compounds) inherent to each member of the family.

Famous in the Loire and throughout the world for perfumed Sauvignon blanc, Pouilly-Fume sits due east, across the Loire River from Sancerre. Limestone soils with clay and flint (also called silex) contribute to the wines' freshness and often times smoky, flinty, mineral character.
