Winemaker Notes

For more than 25 vintages, Isosceles has been Justin's flagship wine and quality benchmark for this style of wine here on the Central Coast of California. A blend based on Cabernet Sauvignon supported by Cabernet Franc and Merlot, the 2014 Isosceles is a perfect example of what makes Paso Robles such a great place to grow these varieties.

The 2014 Isosceles is exceptionally approachable early on with generous black fruit, spice, and balanced textures, but ultimately structured to last for years in your cellar.

Blend: 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc, 12% Merlot

Wine Spectator
Shows a measure of finesse and restraint given the size, which is big and expressive, offering notes of plum, blackberry, baking spices and cedary oak. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Best from 2020 through 2032

This flagship bottling is still a whopper of a wine. This vintage, a blend of 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc and 12% Merlot, offers barely ripe black cherry, green peppercorn and charred fennel on the nose. The palate is loaded with both savory and ripe flavors, from roasted black plums and charred beef to oregano and dill. Very complex and chalky in texture.

The 2014 Justin Isosceles is a big and powerful red wine forged from Bordeaux grape varieties—Mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with some Cabernet Franc and Merlot. This wine shows up with excellent flavors of the black fruit, tar, and oak. (Tasted: October 30, 2017, San Francisco, CA)

Justin and Deborah Baldwin acquired their land in 1981 and planted 72 acres in vineyards that same year. Initially they were wine growers, selling to other wineries. Then, in 1987, they harvested their first grapes bottled under the Justin label. Justin Winery concentrates on two Bordeaux styled red wines: Isoscleles, which is a 100% estate blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc and Justification, a blend of Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Varietals are planted to specific soil types on their hillside vineyards 8 miles from the Pacific Ocean, on the Central Coast.

Paso Robles Wine

Central Coast, California

Paso Robles has made a name for itself as a source of supple, powerful, fruit-driven wines. But with eleven smaller sub-AVAs, there is actually quite a bit of diversity to be found in this inland portion of California’s Central Coast.

Just east over the Santa Lucia Mountains from the chilly Pacific Ocean, lie the coolest in the region: Adelaida, Templeton Gap and (Paso Robles) Willow Creek Districts, as well as York Mountain AVA and Santa Margarita Ranch. These all experience more ocean fog, wind and precipitation compared to the rest of the Paso sub-appellations. The San Miguel, (Paso Robles) Estrella, (Paso Robles) Geneso, (Paso Robles) Highlands, El Pomar and Creston Districts, along with San Juan Creek, are the hotter, more western appellations of the greater Paso Robles AVA.

This is mostly red wine country, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel standing out as the star performers. Other popular varieties include Merlot, Petite Sirah, Petit Verdot, Syrah, Grenache and Rhône blends, both red and white. There is a fairly uniform tendency here towards wines that are unapologetically bold and opulently fruit-driven, albeit with a surprising amount of acidity thanks to the region’s chilly nighttime temperatures.

One of the world’s most classic and popular styles of red wine, Bordeaux-inspired blends have spread from their homeland in France to nearly every corner of the New World. Typically based on either Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot and supported by Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot, the best of these are densely hued, fragrant, full of fruit and boast a structure that begs for cellar time. Somm Secret—Blends from Bordeaux are generally earthier compared to those from the New World, which tend to be fruit-dominant.
