Winemaker Notes

The ISOSCELES has a brilliant ruby color with garnet hues. Layers upon layers of aromas appear as this wine evolves in the glass. Toasted oak, pencil lead, and caramel combine with cherry, black currant and earthy components on the nose. A delicate, soft entry is complemented by raspberry, strawberry and black currant. Cedar and spice appear after the fruit components and are quickly followed by a delicate balance of acidity and medium bodied tannins. On the finish, the wine leaves a lasting impression of toasted oak, strawberry, raspberry, blackcurrant and blackberry.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Justin’s flagship offering, the unfiltered 2001 Isosceles Reserve (73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Cabernet Franc, 5% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot, and 1% Malbec), boasts a blockbuster perfume of incense, black currants, spice, flowers, and subtle wood. Voluptuous in the mouth, with tremendous fruit purity, a beautiful, multi-layered texture, and a long finish, this terrific offering is about as good as Bordeaux varietals can be in this sector of California’s Central Coast. Although accessible, this tour de force in winemaking will drink well over the next 10-15 years.

Wine Enthusiast
Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated Bordeaux blend, starting with lush, inviting new oak, cassis, sweet thyme, vanilla and mushroom aromas, Turns subtle, supple and elegant in the mouth, powerful and refined. Dry, long, this wine finishes with class and distinction.

Wine Spectator
Mature, elegant and stylish, with complex dark berry, plum, spice and sandalwood flavors that gain depth and dimension, with a supple texture and good length. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot.—2001 California Cabernet blind retrospective (June 2011).

Justin Winery Image
Justin and Deborah Baldwin acquired their land in 1981 and planted 72 acres in vineyards that same year. Initially they were wine growers, selling to other wineries. Then, in 1987, they harvested their first grapes bottled under the Justin label. Justin Winery concentrates on two Bordeaux styled red wines: Isoscleles, which is a 100% estate blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc and Justification, a blend of Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Varietals are planted to specific soil types on their hillside vineyards 8 miles from the Pacific Ocean, on the Central Coast.

Paso Robles Wine

Central Coast, California

Paso Robles has made a name for itself as a source of supple, powerful, fruit-driven Central Coast wines. But with eleven smaller sub-AVAs, there is actually quite a bit of diversity to be found in this inland portion of California’s Central Coast.

Just east over the Santa Lucia Mountains from the chilly Pacific Ocean, lie the coolest in the region: Adelaida, Templeton Gap and (Paso Robles) Willow Creek Districts, as well as York Mountain AVA and Santa Margarita Ranch. These all experience more ocean fog, wind and precipitation compared to the rest of the Paso sub-appellations. The San Miguel, (Paso Robles) Estrella, (Paso Robles) Geneso, (Paso Robles) Highlands, El Pomar and Creston Districts, along with San Juan Creek, are the hotter, more western appellations of the greater Paso Robles AVA.

This is mostly red wine country, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel standing out as the star performers. Other popular varieties include Merlot, Petite Sirah, Petit Verdot, Syrah, Grenache and Rhône blends, both red and white. There is a fairly uniform tendency here towards wines that are unapologetically bold and opulently fruit-driven, albeit with a surprising amount of acidity thanks to the region’s chilly nighttime temperatures.

One of the world’s most classic and popular styles of red wine, Bordeaux-inspired blends have spread from their homeland in France to nearly every corner of the New World. Typically based on either Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot and supported by Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot, the best of these are densely hued, fragrant, full of fruit and boast a structure that begs for cellar time. Somm Secret—Blends from Bordeaux are generally earthier compared to those from the New World, which tend to be fruit-dominant.
