100% Verdejo from La Mancha, Spain. Stainless steel fermented, the wine boasts superb minerality on a clean, vibrant finish. Lemon and lime notes at its core, there are secondary flavors of mandarin orange and papaya seeds. A hint of spice and wave of salinity evidences the dried riverbeds where these grapes are grown.
Captivating and full of character, Verdejo grows with great success in Rueda, Spain and virtually nowhere else in Europe. It has become so trendy in Spain since the turn of the century that plantings have also increased tremendously. Somm Secret—Contrary to what some may think, it is actually not related to the Portugese variety with a very similar name, Verdelho. In fact, DNA profiling suggests it may be a sibling of Godello, another native of NW Spain.
The Moors gave it the name, ‘Manxa,’ which fittingly means ‘parched earth.’ La Mancha, the largest Spanish wine producing region in all of Spain, is one of its hottest and driest. Sturdy and drought-resistant white varieietes like Airen, Viura and Verdejo thrive in this environment.
