Winemaker Notes

Brilliant ruby red with garnet reflections, this wine offers fragrant aromas of maraschino cherry, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla and anise. The taste is full and balanced with sweet and soft tannins that confer to good aromatic persistence.

An excellent wine for drinking with the finest roasted red meats and poultry.

The 2013 Taurasi is 100% Aglianico from a single vineyard and spent close to two years in French oak, followed by 14 months in bottle before release. It's a deeper ruby/plum-colored effort that offers a pretty perfume of blackberries, cracked pepper, tar, and spice box. It's a classic Aglianico with its tannins and acidity, and has beautiful, medium to full-bodied richness, a voluptuous texture, terrific balance, and a great finish.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2013 Taurasi is a bold and broad-shouldered red wine that is generous both in terms of its primary fruit and the toasted oak notes so generously supplied in a supporting role. The finish is soft and richly textured with no sign of the biting astringency you sometimes get with the Aglianico grape. The expert winemaking team at this important Campania estate has crafted a beautiful and contemporary expression from an important red wine territory.

Black cherries, dark plums, mulberries, fresh violets and some dried herbs. Medium to full body, fine tannins and a fresh, blue-fruit-tinged finish. So much tangy fruit. Drink now and enjoy.

Wine & Spirits

This wine is packed with flavors of blackberry jam, dark chocolate and licorice. The wine aged for 22 months in medium-toasted French barriques, gaining notes of vanilla and warm spices, but the flavors remain encased in rigid, ferrous tannins, calling for several years of cellaring.

Feudi di San Gregorio Winery Video

Feudi di San Gregorio was established in 1986 in Sorbo Serpico, a tiny village in Campania’s Irpinia region, near Mount Vesuvius. A modern expression of a centuries-old tradition of passion and dedication to the land, it is one of Campania's premier winemaking estates. Feudi is a joint venture between the Ercolino and Capaldo families of Irpinia. The proprietors of this family-run estate have selected the finest vineyards in which to nurture this region's unique, indigenous varietals. Owner and winemaker Enzo Ercolino works closely with consultant Riccardo Cotarella, one of Italy's foremost enologists.

Situated in one of Italy’s most exciting and innovative wine regions, this highly acclaimed winery encourages us to rediscover the identity of Mediterranean flavors through indigenous grapes that reach their full potential with their modern winemaking approach. The results have been remarkable – the wines of Feudi di San Gregorio have met time and again with stellar reviews and have garnered international critical acclaim.

A winemaking renaissance is underfoot in Campania as more and more small, artisan and family-run wineries redefine their style with vineyard improvements and cellar upgrades. The region boasts a cool Mediterranean climate with extreme coastal, as well as high elevation mountain terroirs. It is cooler than one might expect in Campania; the region usually sees some of the last harvest dates in Italy.

Just south of Mount Vesuvio, the volcanic and sandy soils create aromatic and fresh reds based on Piedirosso and whites, made from Coda di Volpe and Falanghina. Both reds and whites go by the name, Lacryma Christi, meaning the "tears of Christ." South of Mount Vesuvio, along the Amalfi Coast, the white varieties of Falanghina and Biancolella make fresh, flirty, mineral-driven whites, and the red Piedirosso and Sciasinoso vines, which cling to steeply terraced coastlines, make snappy and ripe red wines.

Farther inland, as hills become mountains, the limestone soil of Irpinia supports the whites Fiano di Avellino, Falanghina and Greco di Tufo as well as the most-respected red of the south, Aglianico. Here the best and most age-worthy examples come from Taurasi.

Farther north and inland near the city of Benevento, the Taburno region also produces Aglianico of note—called Aglianico del Taburno—on alluvial soils. While not boasting the same heft as Taurasi, these are also reliable components of any cellar.

Making its home in the mountainous southern Italy, Aglianico is a bold red variety that is late to ripen and often spends until November on the vine. It thrives in Campania as the exclusive variety in the age-worthy red wine called Taurasi. Aglianico also has great success in the volcanic soils of Basilicata where it makes the robust, Aglianico del Vulture. Somm Secret—The name “Aglianico” bears striking resemblance to Ellenico, the Italian word for "Greek," but no evidence shows it has Greek ancestry. However, it first appeared in Italy around an ancient Greek colony located in present-day Avellino, Campania.
