Winemaker Notes

Our clonal selection Pinot Noirs are made with the intent of isolating some of the very best individual lots in our cellar and capturing the nuances that each specific clone offers. This has remained a very small project - approximately six barrels of each wine - and delivers some of our finest expressions of Pinot Noir.

The Clone 115 Pinot Noir has attractive aromas of black cherry, black raspberry and baking spices. The palate has focused flavors of cranberry, red plum, cinnamon and milk chocolate backed up with a streak of minerality and brisk acidity.

Professional Ratings

Fresh and easy aromas of raspberry, plum candy, dark rose petals, boysenberry and allspice show on the nose of this clonal study. The palate blends big, joyous purple fruit and grippy tannic tension, also presenting lavender and Sichuan peppercorn tones.

The 2015 Pinot Noir Clone 115 has a pale to medium ruby-purple color and is scented of dried Provence herbs, underbrush and mossy bark with a core of warm cranberries and red currants, plus a touch of lavender. The medium-bodied palate is firmly structured with chewy tannins and seamless freshness, finishing with persistent earthy notes.

Thin-skinned, finicky and temperamental, Pinot Noir is also one of the most rewarding grapes to grow and remains a labor of love for some of the greatest vignerons in Burgundy. Fairly adaptable but highly reflective of the environment in which it is grown, Pinot Noir prefers a cool climate and requires low yields to achieve high quality. Outside of France, outstanding examples come from in Oregon, California and throughout specific locations in wine-producing world. Somm Secret—André Tchelistcheff, California’s most influential post-Prohibition winemaker decidedly stayed away from the grape, claiming “God made Cabernet. The Devil made Pinot Noir.”

A superior source of California Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, Sta. Rita Hills is the coolest, westernmost sub-region of the larger Santa Ynez Valley appellation within Santa Barbara County. This relatively new AVA is unquestionably one to keep an eye on.

The climate of Sta. Rita Hills is a natural match for Chardonnay and Pinot noir, thanks to the crisp ocean breezes and well-drained, limestone-rich calcareous soil. Here, grapes ripen just enough, while retaining brisk acidity and harmonious balance.
