Winemaker Notes

Aromas and flavors of black cherry, cassis, and the freshest possible raspberries – lifted, intense and elegant. Savory characters of thyme blossom and floral spice overlay a mineral base that is sleek, penetrating, and focused. You can feel the energy of the vines each time you come to the glass. Finishes with deep blackberry fruit and a dusty cocoa edge. Drink between 2022 and 2034. Enjoy a glass over an extended evening to fully appreciate the deep complexity inherent in one of our most site-driven wines.

Moving to the Pinot Noirs, the 2019 Pinot Noir DuMOL Estate Vineyard reveals a deep ruby hue to go with classic notes of ripe black cherries, sappy underbrush, sassafras, and spring flowers. Straight-up gorgeous on the palate as well, it's medium to full-bodied and has a solid spine of acidity, wonderful depth of fruit, and a great, great finish. It has plenty of up-front appeal yet should cruise for a decade in cold cellars, if not longer.

An aromatic nose of red berries, fresh herbs and roses. Hibiscus, too. Medium-bodied with fine, creamy tannins. Stony-mineral character colors the red fruit. Well balanced with impressive length and nuance. Bright acidity. Tasting well now, but could use another year or more.

Medium ruby, the 2019 Pinot Noir Estate Vineyard has alluring, broody scents of black cherries, licorice, mushrooms and lavender, with loads of spicy accents in the undercurrent. The medium-bodied palate is silky and fresh, its layered fruits still coiled at this stage, and it has a long, spicy finish. Give it another 2-3 years in bottle to unfold. Best After 2023

While the Russian River Valley is a large appellation with multiple climate zones and soil types, it is best known for cool-climate varieties, with Pinot Noir as the most celebrated. The grapes benefit from a reliable late afternoon flow of Pacific Ocean fog through the Petaluma Gap and along the Russian River Valley that ensures slow and steady ripening and the preservation of grape acidity. Today many of California’s most highly regarded Pinot Noir vineyards are in the Russian River Valley, along with its sub-appellation, Green Valley.

Historically Russian River Valley Pinot Noirs had bright red fruit and delicate earthy, mineral notes. But changes in viticultural and winemaking practices have led to stylistic changes in some of the region’s wines. Adjustments to canopy management, among other techniques, have resulted in riper fruit and bolder wines as well. These show flavors of black cherry, blackberry, cola, spice and darker, loamy earth tones, accenting traditional Pinot Noir notes of strawberry, raspberry and light cherry.
