Winemaker Notes

Professional Ratings

Over the years, DuMOL has been among the most consistently successful makers of expressive Pinot Noir, and these from the 2013 vintage buttress our long-held fondness for their wines. The "connor" wins top honors this year by dint of its fruity depth, its deft use of sweet oak and its altogether beguiling richness, and it earns an extra deep bow of appreciation for its altogether impeccable balance. It is, in short, a complete and involving look at the grape, and it will not approach its very best until its tenth birthday nears.

Clean, fresh and deftly balanced, exhibiting lively, snappy wild berry, cherry and raspberry flavors at the core, with fine-grained, mineral-laced tannins and a mouthwatering aftertaste. Drink now through 2019.

Heritage and experience

Founded in 1996, DuMOL is a latter-day pioneer in the Russian River Valley. Winemaker, Viticulturist and Partner, Andy Smith, farmed the region for nearly a decade before joining in 1999, and Associate Winemakers Julie Cooper and Jenna Davis, and Cellar Master Jaime Eufracio, have over 40 years combined experience at DuMOL.

While the Russian River Valley is a large appellation with multiple climate zones and soil types, it is best known for cool-climate varieties, with Pinot Noir as the most celebrated. The grapes benefit from a reliable late afternoon flow of Pacific Ocean fog through the Petaluma Gap and along the Russian River Valley that ensures slow and steady ripening and the preservation of grape acidity. Today many of California’s most highly regarded Pinot Noir vineyards are in the Russian River Valley, along with its sub-appellation, Green Valley.

Historically Russian River Valley Pinot Noirs had bright red fruit and delicate earthy, mineral notes. But changes in viticultural and winemaking practices have led to stylistic changes in some of the region’s wines. Adjustments to canopy management, among other techniques, have resulted in riper fruit and bolder wines as well. These show flavors of black cherry, blackberry, cola, spice and darker, loamy earth tones, accenting traditional Pinot Noir notes of strawberry, raspberry and light cherry.
