Winemaker Notes

The 2017 Complant Napa Valley Mt Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon has a dark garnet color with purple to brick hues. The wine is almost opaque. On the nose, it displays fresh blueberry, raspberry, violet, graphite, mesquite, spearmint, and leather. On the palate, the wine enters with bright blueberry and blackberry fruit and follows with a rich mid-palate with well-integrated tannins. The progression of this wine is seamless and leads to a long finish of fresh fruit and herbs.

COMMENTARY: The 2017 Complant Cabernet Sauvignon Beller Vineyard makes a statement that the Mount Veeder AVA produces rich, lush Cabernets. TASTING NOTES: This wine is wonderfully balanced. Enjoy its charming aromas and flavors of black fruits, red fruits, and dust with a standing rib roast infused with bits of garlic and rosemary twigs. (Tasted: December 3, 2019, San Francisco, CA)

Complant produces rock star wines from the father-son team of Daniel and Sam Baron. Daniel started at Chateau Montelena in 1973 and then moved on to study with Dr. Harold Olmo at UC Davis. In 1981, he left California for France, and spent a year at Chateau Petrus. This association with Christian Moueix, then owner of Petrus, led him back to California and resulted in a twelve-year stint at Dominus, eventually as GM. In 1994 he became the winemaker at Silver Oak Cellars, where he remained for twenty-three vintages, along with helping found Twomey Cellars. His son Sam received his degree in Viticulture and Enology from UC Davis in 2012, and has done internships in Napa Valley, Burgundy and New Zealand. Sam’s day job is making wine for one of Northern California’s most forward-thinking wineries – but Complant represents his passion and an opportunity to work with his lifelong mentor. The Barons’ skill with wines of restraint and elegance is evident in these four bottlings. The Pomme-en-Main Rose´ is from organically grown Zinfandel grapes from Benguerel Family Vineyard in the heart of Kenwood, in Sonoma Valley. Grapes are picked at relatively low brix and foot-stomped at the winery, then fermented on their native yeast. The wine is juicy with a slight saline quality and flavors of wild strawberry. Chardonnay is from Steve Matthiasson’s organically farmed Linda Vista Vineyard in Napa. Grapes are fermented on their natural yeast and aged on lees for six months before bottling without filtration. Complant’s Soberanes Vineyard Pinot Noir is made from eight rows of vines planted with the Pisoni clone on a bench adjacent to the renowned Garys’ Vineyard. The wine is fermented with natural yeast and aged in neutral burgundy barrels for one year. The Beller Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon comes from the top of Mt. Veeder and is a coferment of Cabernet Sauvignon (86%) and Cabernet Franc (14%). The wine is aged in thin-staved Bordeaux barrels (22% new), with racking through the heads every three months. This is a method that Daniel learned working in Pomerol in the 1980’s. It is labor intensive and requires artisanally made tools imported from France, but it has a magical effect on the wine. High toned aromatics are preserved, while the tannins are smoothed and integrated into the fabric of the wine.

A noble variety bestowed with both power and concentration, Cabernet Sauvignon enjoys success all over the globe, its best examples showing potential to age beautifully for decades. Cabernet Sauvignon flourishes in Bordeaux's Medoc where it is often blended with Merlot and smaller amounts of some combination of Cabernet Franc, Malbecand Petit Verdot. In the Napa Valley, ‘Cab’ is responsible for some of the world’s most prestigious, age-worthy and sought-after “cult” wines. Somm Secret—DNA profiling in 1997 revealed that Cabernet Sauvignon was born from a spontaneous crossing of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc in 17th century southwest France.

Napa Valley, California

Centered at the peak for which it is named, Mount Veeder is Napa’s largest sub-AVA. But even though the entire appellation spreads over 16,000 acres, vineyards cover a mere 1,000. Scattered among Douglas firs and bristlecone pines, Mount Veeder vineyards extend south from the upper elevations of the Mayacamas Mountains—the highest point at 2,400 feet—to the border of the Carneros region. Less than 25 wineries produce wine from Mount Veeder fruit.

Winemaking began early in this appellation. In 1864, Captain Stelham Wing presented the first Mount Veeder wine to the Napa County Fair; it came from today’s Wing Canyon Vineyard. Prohibition, of course, halted winemaking and viticulture wasn’t revitalized until the founding of Mayacamas Vineyards in 1951 and Bernstein Vineyards in 1964.

The Bernstein Vineyards was actually home to the first Petit Verdot in California, planted in 1975. Today most of the Petit Verdot in Napa Valley originates from this vineyard.

Rocky volcanic clay and ancient seabed matter dominate Mount Veeder soils—perfect for Bordeaux varieties. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot enjoy spectacular success. These varieties produce wines rich in brambly blackberry and black cherry fruit with herbal and floral aromatics. Structures are moderate to assertive and wines have great staying power.

Chardonnay from Mount Veeder is lush, full and balanced mineral and fresh citrus flavors.
