Winemaker Notes

The nose displays aromas that are both concentrated and complex, with layers of red currant, cassis, bay, sage and anise mingling with oak-inspired hints of nutmeg, clove and smoke. On the palate, this wine is sleek and elegant with seamless tannins and good natural acidity underscoring flavors of cherry, dark chocolate, roasted coffee, graphite and cigar box.

Blend: 76% Cabernet Franc, 16% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Malbec, 3% Petit Verdot

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The very deep garnet-purple colored 2016 Cabernet Franc comes sashaying out of the glass with tantalizing rose hip tea, baked raspberries and forest floor scents with a core of redcurrant jelly and black cherry pie plus hints of menthol and pencil shavings. Medium to full-bodied, the palate reveals impressive tension and bags of energetic red fruits, framed by grainy tannins and finishing long and perfumed.

The 2016 Cabernet Franc is a beautiful expression of the variety and has a classic, complex, seamless style in its flowery blue and black fruits, forest floor, damp earth, blood orange, and leafy herbs. Pure, elegant, and perfectly balanced, with great intensity and depth, it will be better with short-term cellaring and drink beautifully for 15 years or more. Even at this price, it's a smoking value.

Shows a fresh, foresty edge of cabernet franc with a thread of attractive, toasty oak across some quite dark berries and cassis. The palate has an assertively focused style with seamless, smooth darker-fruit flavors. Plush finish. Drink or hold.

COMMENTARY: The 2016 Chappellet Cabernet Franc is a treat to the senses. TASTING NOTES: This wine exhibits lovely and persistent aromas and flavors; pair it with stir-fried skirt steak. (Tasted: May 19, 2019, San Francisco, CA)

Chappellet Winery Watch Chappellet's Amazing Story Winery Video
For more than four decades, the Chappellet family has been crafting world-class wines from fruit cultivated on the steep, rocky slopes of Napa Valley's renowned Pritchard Hill. As one of the first wineries to pioneer high-elevation hillside planting, and one of the few remaining great family-owned Napa Valley wineries, Chappellet Vineyard and Winery has influenced generations of vintners. Throughout its history, Chappellet has also established an enduring legacy as one of California's most acclaimed producers of Cabernet Sauvignon.

The Chappellets' romance with Pritchard Hill began when Donn and Molly Chappellet first glimpsed the mountain's spectacular vistas in the late 1960s. Inspired by the notion that Bacchus loves the hills, Donn and Molly followed the advice of legendary winemaker André Tchelistcheff and settled on the rocky eastern slopes of the Napa Valley. There, on the mountain’s serene and picturesque hillsides, the Chappellets established their home and winery, raising their children and cultivating the vineyards.

Since being founded by Donn and Molly in 1967, Chappellet has earned acclaim championing the robust power and complexity of wines crafted from mountain grapes. At the same time, Chappellet has helped to establish Pritchard Hill as one of California’s most revered winegrowing sites. To honor the mountain's rich, expressive character, the winemaking team focuses on creating extraordinary, age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignons that embody the intensity and finesse of fruit from Pritchard Hill.

Undoubtedly proving its merit over and over, Napa Valley is a now a leading force in the world of prestigious red wine regions. Though Cabernet Sauvignon dominates Napa Valley, other red varieties certainly thrive here. Important but often overlooked include Merlot and other Bordeaux varieties well-regarded on their own as well as for their blending capacities. Very old vine Zinfandel represents an important historical stronghold for the region and Pinot noir is produced in the cooler southern parts, close to the San Pablo Bay.

Perfectly situated running north to south, the valley acts as a corridor, pulling cool, moist air up from the San Pablo Bay in the evenings during the hot days of the growing season, which leads to even and slow grape ripening. Furthermore the valley claims over 100 soil variations including layers of volcanic, gravel, sand and silt—a combination excellent for world-class red wine production.
