Winemaker Notes

Avancia Nobleza Godello is the result of a barrel selection of wine sourced from the Finca Aeiroá, planted in 1939 above O Barco de Valdeorras on slate and schist soils. This spectacular site is a field blend primarily of Godello intermixed with Mencía and other red grape varieties. The northern orientation of this site and slate soils produces wines of remarkable freshness and minerality.

A barrel selection that's 100% Godello from vines planted in 1940, the 2022 Avancia Nobleza Godello was first made in 2020 and is raised in 33% new larger format barrels. Ripe honeyed lemon, quince, crushed stone, and minty, floral notes all emerge from the glass, and it's medium-bodied, with a layered, richer, balanced mouthfeel, beautiful acidity, and a concentrated, lengthy style that will evolve for a decade.

Flinty and spicy oak touches make this very attractive. Expect nectarines, sour cream and nougat notes. Full-bodied, pure and pretty concentrated on the palate, with bright acidity and a lengthy, textured finish.

  • 93
A graceful white, with a pleasing buoyancy to the well-knit spine of acidity supporting mirabelle plum, peach skin, clementine, green almond and anise flavors. Fine and lacy in texture, offering a subtle underpinning of salty minerality, with notes of white blossoms and mountain herbs echoing on the finish. Drink now through 2029. 450 cases made, 200 cases imported.

Godello is native to northwest Spain and has experienced a major revival in the last 20 years. Godello wines are typically sleek and lightly creamy in texture. Barrel fermentation and lees stirring are typical in Valdeorras, Spain where the grape comes from. These winemaking techniques make the most of Godello's inherent structure and help bring out its lovely floral character. Somm Secret—DNA profiling says that Spain’s Godello is actually identical to the Portugese grape variety Gouveio, which grows throughout the Douro and Dão (where it used to mistakenly be called Verdelho).

Just to the south of Bierzo, the steeply terraced Valdeorras Spanish wine region is a respected source of both red and white wines. Garnacha Tintorera (Alicante Bouschet) and Mencía are the principal red varieties while Godello and Palomino compose the majority of this region's whites.
