Red White Sparkling Rosé Spirits GiftsLearn about Kerner — taste profile, popular regions and more …
The Kerner grape, a cross of white Riesling and red Trollinger (Schiava), takes its light color and character from its first parent. A cool-climate variety suited to the highlands of Italy’s Alto Adige, where most of it is now grown, it also thrives in the German regions of Pfalz and Rheinhessen, as well as Austria and Slovenia. Aromatic and high in acid, it can improve with age.
Tasting Notes for Kerner
Kerner is a dry white wine with a high acidity. An aromatic variety, Kerner can show a variety of floral notes, as well as green apple, apricot, tangerine, tropical fruit and fresh herb.
Food Pairings for Kerner
This is a natural for summer afternoon quaffer, and it shows well as an aperitif. Springtime salads with apple and chicken, fresh fish, grilled chicken, caramelized onions and spicy curries are all natural pairings.
Sommelier Secrets for Kerner
Unlike many hybrid varieties, Kerner is named not for its viticulturalist but the 19th-century German poet Justinus Kerner, noted for his drinking songs. So don’t be surprised if a glass or two inspires you to verse!
