In 1978, when Morton Estate was founded, New Zealand was well into the first decade of its viticultural revolution.  Since the early 1970s, hundreds of acres of new vineyards had been planted on both North and South Islands; the focus was on selecting the perfect terrains for the noblest international varieties.  The lovely, Cape Dutch-style winery in the Bay of Plenty soon joined the country's avant-garde, developing its own vineyard sites both in Hawke's Bay (east coast of North Island) and Marlborough (north end of South Island).

The first vintage, in 1983, already struck gold.  Following harvests established the winery's reputation for consistently high quality.  Morton Estate Chardonnay has since become a New Zealand classic, rated among the very best year after year - including a London International Wine Challenge award as "Best Chardonnay in the World".
