Learn about Queensland wine, common tasting notes, where the region is and more ...

Famous among tourists for its long stretches of white sandy beaches and aquamarine waters, inland Queensland actually offers up some unique wine country. Tucked among forested mountains, at 2,300 to 3,300 feet elevation, is the aptly named Granite Belt region where decomposed granite soils and an agreeable subtropical climate allow grape growing. Shiraz is the main variety among many—mainly red—but Chardonnay does well too. Slightly inland from the famous Sunshine Coast and Fraser Island, the region of South Burnett is known for Verdelho, Semillon and Cabernet Sauvignon.
