Winemaker Notes

In the glass, the wine is inky violet and highly aromatic, with dark cherry, cocoa and vanilla complemented by notes of cardamom, anise and cinnamon. On the palate, the wine is youthful with lots of structure and pure fruit flavors. A core of black cherry and plum flavors is layered with notes of coffee and spice, and the wine's juicy tannins pleasingly coat the mouth. Lush and perfectly structured, the 2019 is drinking beautifully now, but will evolve for easily another 20 years.

Professional Ratings

  • 93
A solid red with blackberries and dark chocolate, as well as crushed-stone character. Medium body and layered tannins. Attractive now, but give it time. Better in 2025.
  • 92
Solidly built, with a core of dark açaí and blackberry fruit compote lined with a cold cast iron note. Compact, with a frankly toasty edge on the finish, though cellaring should loosen this up a little. Textbook Coombsville profile. Best from 2023 through 2034.

A noble variety bestowed with both power and concentration, Cabernet Sauvignon enjoys success all over the globe, its best examples showing potential to age beautifully for decades. Cabernet Sauvignon flourishes in Bordeaux's Medoc where it is often blended with Merlot and smaller amounts of some combination of Cabernet Franc, Malbecand Petit Verdot. In the Napa Valley, ‘Cab’ is responsible for some of the world’s most prestigious, age-worthy and sought-after “cult” wines. Somm Secret—DNA profiling in 1997 revealed that Cabernet Sauvignon was born from a spontaneous crossing of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc in 17th century southwest France.
