Winemaker Notes

From a select vineyard in the highly prized cooler climate Santa Lucia Highlands, a light wine that is fruit-forward and aromatic, with crisp acidity. A go-to red wine for all spring and summer foods. Aged 24 months in one- and two-use French oak.

When I visit wine bars, I often gravitate towards Grenache as my red wine of choice. I find that they are often serious, yet fun. The 2014 Windy Oaks Estate Winery Grenache is such a wine. The wine shows bright raspberry notes, with a shading of savory spices. Drinks well now with braised meat dishes. (Tasted: May 11, 2017, San Francisco, CA)

Grenache thrives in any warm, Mediterranean climate where ample sunlight allows its clusters to achieve full phenolic ripeness. While Grenache's birthplace is Spain (there called Garnacha), today it is more recognized as the key player in the red blends of the Southern Rhône, namely Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Côtes du Rhône and its villages. Somm Secret—The Italian island of Sardinia produces bold, rustic, single varietal Grenache (there called Cannonau). California, Washington and Australia have achieved found success with Grenache, both flying solo and in blends.

Perhaps the most highly regarded appellation within Monterey County, Santa Lucia Highlands AVA benefits from a combination of warm morning sunshine and brisk afternoon breezes, allowing grapes to ripen slowly and fully. The result is concentrated, flavorful wines that retain their natural acidity. Wineries here do not shy away from innovation, and place a high priority on sustainable viticultural practices.

The climatic conditions here are perfectly suited to the production of ripe, rich Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. These Burgundian varieties dominate an overwhelming percentage of plantings, though growers have also found success with Syrah, Riesling and Pinot Gris.
