    Winemaker Notes

    This gorgeous pink-orange hued Rosé is bone-dry and blessed with a bit of grip from the Nebbiolo and tons of fruit from the Dolcetto. While this is no doubt a perfect summertime sipping wine, it will most definitely stand up to your cheese and charcuterie plate on the deck or the roasted chicken in your picnic basket.

    Wind Gap is not about making the "perfect" wine. It's about making honest, authentic and compelling wine from special vineyard sites. What interests us about wine is what makes it different-the subtle nuances and characteristics that tell a particular wine's story, reguardless of appellation.

    We've combed the state to gather a collection of some of the moste exciting vineyards for producing the kinds of grapes we love - Cabernet from Coombsville in south Napa, Chardonnay from the dramatic limestone and granit of Chalone, Grenache from the Shale and Limestone blanketed hills of western Paso Robles, and Syrah from the windy and cold Sonoma Coast. Along the way, we've been lucky enough to meet and work along with like-minded growers who embrace the discerning farming practices we belive in.

    Interestingly enough, many of our vineyards are planted along or are directly influenced by one wind gap or another. These geological breaks in the coastal hill funnel wind inland and strongly influence the growing and ripening fo our grapes. It seemed only fitting to us that our name should celebrate the forces of nature that are shaping our wine.

    North Coast

    Encompassing the grape-growing regions located north of San Francisco, the North Coast AVA includes six counties: Lake, Marin, Mendocino, Napa, Sonoma, and Solano. Napa and Sonoma get all of the attention, but there are a few other counties producing great wine in Northern California. Two notable examples are Mendocino and Lake County, the northernmost winegrowing regions in the state. These AVAs are very different, both from their neighbors to the south and from one another.

    Mendocino benefits from the cooling fog of the Pacific Ocean and is able to successfully grow cool-climate varieties like Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Riesling. There is a significant focus here on organic viticulture. Inland Lake County, on the other hand, is considerably warmer, and Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, and Sauvignon Blanc are the dominant varieties. Both regions are excellent sources of high-quality but affordable California wines in a wide range of styles.

    Whether it’s playful and fun or savory and serious, most rosé today is not your grandmother’s White Zinfandel, though that category remains strong. Pink wine has recently become quite trendy, and this time around it’s commonly quite dry. It is produced throughout the world from a vast array of grape varieties, but the most successful sources are California, southern France (particularly Provence), and parts of Spain and Italy.

    Since the pigment in red wines comes from keeping fermenting juice in contact with the grape skins for an extended period, it follows that a pink wine can be made using just a brief period of skin contact—usually just a couple of days. The resulting color will depend on the grape variety and the winemaking style, ranging from pale salmon to deep magenta. These wines are typically fresh and fruity, fermented at cool temperatures in stainless steel to preserve the primary aromas and flavors. Most rosé, with a few notable exceptions, should be drunk rather young, within a few years of the vintage.
