    Winemaker Notes

    Ellie's rich aromatics and texture offer a sensory treat for Petite Sirah lovers. Dark berry aromas merge with a lovely vanilla oak essence, tantalizing one to take the first sip. The round, almost opulent mouthfeel doesn't disappoint as it reveals brambly berry and oak notes mingled with traces of cocoa, eucalyptus and fine herbs. Spicy yet supple tannins appear mid-palate, adding interest and depth as they linger in the finish.

    Wilson Winery was built on tradition and family - much like its landmark barn anchored to the eastern rim of the legendary Dry Creek Valley. When Ken and Diane Wilson opened the century-old cellar doors, they began to share more than their extraordinary wines, they offer a view into a wine valley's history and a legacy of winemaking.

    It was in 1993 when the Wilsons took on the restoration of the old tin barn - once the Chris Fredson Winery - complete with the original redwood vats and tanks. Today, this historic barn houses modern stainless steel tanks and a new collection of French and American oak barrels for aging the Wilsons' Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Syrah and Petite Sirah.

    Dry Creek Valley

    A multifaceted and highly reputable sub-region of Sonoma, Dry Creek Valley is responsible for a wide range of wine styles both red and white. The warm and welcoming appellation is home to a number of family-owned vineyards and wineries that place a strong emphasis on sustainable farming practices. One of the smallest AVAs in California, Dry Creek Valley has a winning combination of ideal geography and climate. Fertile, well-drained soils create concentrated varietal character while long, warm days bookended by cool nights allow grapes to reach full ripeness while retaining acidity and balance.

    Zinfandel reigns supreme here, often grown on vines aged 35 to 100 or older, taking on a powerful, voluptuous character favored by fans of the variety. Sauvignon Blanc, the valley’s signature white grape, also performs exceptionally well. Many other varieties grow comfortably here, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Rhône varieties, and Italian varieties. Petite Sirah and Carignan are commonly blended with Zinfandel.

    With its deep color, rich texture, firm tannin, and bold flavors, there is nothing petite about Petite Sirah. The variety was originally known as Durif, but took on its more popular moniker when it was imported to California from France in 1884. Despite its origins, it has since become known as a quintessentially Californian grape. It has been commonly utilized as a blending partner for softer Zinfandel and other varieties, but has also found success as a single varietal wine. It is most commonly grown in Lodi and the Central Valley, and to an extent in Sonoma and Napa counties.

    Petite Sirah wines are typically deep, dark, rich, and inky, with concentrated flavors of blueberry, plum, backberry, black pepper, sweet baking spice, leather, and cigar box, and chewy, chocolatey tannins. Notes of vanilla and coconut can be found in examples with significant amounts of new oak.

    Perfect Pairings

    Petite Sirah’s full body and bold fruit make it an ideal match for barbecue, especially brisket with a slightly sweet sauce, and other rich meat dishes. The variety’s heavy tannins call for fatty protein and strong flavors that won’t get drowned out by the wine.

    Sommelier Secret

    Don’t get Petite Sirah confused with Syrah—it is not, as the name might seem to imply, a smaller version of Syrah. It is, however, the offspring of Syrah (crossed with an obscure French variety called Peloursin), so the two grapes do share some characteristics despite being completely distinct varieties.
