Winemaker Notes

The beautifully pure nose of red currant, citrus, and red cherry mix with a deft touch of vanilla and wood spices. There is a savory note of dried sage and smoky minerals. Weir Vineyard Pinot Noir is all about the earthier side of Pinot and continues to develop with even a few years of bottle age. On the palate, there is a sense of sappiness with red fruit flavors, and finishes with a lively citrus peel lift. The minerally texture is sophisticated and persists all the way to the long, graceful finish.

Strong cinnamon and clove aromas lead to bold, ripe black-cherry and cassis flavors in this full-bodied, well-structured and ultimately nuanced wine. It has lots of grip on the palate from firm tannins and bright acidity, while the spicy oak flavors last all the way to the finish. Cellar Selection.

Thin-skinned, finicky and temperamental, Pinot Noir is also one of the most rewarding grapes to grow and remains a labor of love for some of the greatest vignerons in Burgundy. Fairly adaptable but highly reflective of the environment in which it is grown, Pinot Noir prefers a cool climate and requires low yields to achieve high quality. Outside of France, outstanding examples come from in Oregon, California and throughout specific locations in wine-producing world. Somm Secret—André Tchelistcheff, California’s most influential post-Prohibition winemaker decidedly stayed away from the grape, claiming “God made Cabernet. The Devil made Pinot Noir.”
