Williams Selyem Burt Williams Morning Dew Ranch Pinot Noir 2011 Front Label

Winemaker Notes

Our second vintage from this cooler site within the Anderson Valley, the wine exhibits notes of pie cherries, fennel, fresh cardamom and toasted vanilla beans. Vibrant strawberry flavors and supple tannins fill your mouth with a long, silky finish. Yields were quite low in 2011 and the wine exhibits true site expression with added finesse. The juicy acidity only adds to its age-ability.

Perfumed and strikingly floral, this soft, seductive Pinot is light in color and body, with handsome layerings of strawberry fruit, Asian spice and suggestions of just-unearthed mushrooms or a newly minted Christmas wreath. On the finish, a touch of vanilla-tinged oak rounds things out.

This is the second year that Williams Selyem has made a wine from the Anderson Valley wineyard planted by the winery's founder, Burt Williams. It's a surprisingly juicy pinot noir considering the North Coast's cool weather in 2011. That coolness comes through as a floral character, while the tannins remain supple and rounded; it's dangerously easy to drink with a roast chicken.

Anderson Valley, located in Mendocino County just above Sonoma County, is one of California’s coolest AVAs, allowing it a long growing season. Only 15 miles long, the region makes a slice eastward through the mountains, from the frigid Pacific Ocean. Dramatic diurnal temperature variations here preserve grape acidity and thus freshness in the finished wines. These are prime conditions for growing Pinot Noir, and the valley produces many fine versions. Characteristics of Anderson Valley Pinot Noir typically include crisp acidity, cranberry and strawberry notes as well as earthy notes of forest floor and mushroom.

Still Pinot Noir, however, is only part of the story. Pinot Noir, along with Chardonnay, are also grown for Anderson Valley’s exceptional sparkling wines. Produced via the traditional method, these offer a classic toasty note from lees aging, bright, complex fruit notes and a clean, refreshing character.
