This has a gently creamy edge with ripe apples and pears. Lime pith, too. The palate has a smooth, juicy and quite rich feel.
This small winery has been quietly making quality wines in Westhofen since 1763. Like its two more famous neighbors, Keller and Wittmann, Groebe is a member of the prestigious VDP. The estate is owned by Friedrich (he goes by Fritz) and his wife Manuela and comprises 9 hectares that are sustainably farmed. No fertilizer is used and natural vegetation is allowed to grow between the vines. Natural yeasts, large used oak casks and long fermentation do the work in the cellar. Groebe GGs (Grosses Gewächs) rank among the top dry wines of Germany, combining elegance and power and maturing magnificently. Fritz loves being a winegrower, another profession never came into question for Fritz, to him it means passion for wine, for creativity and for freedom.
Riesling possesses a remarkable ability to reflect the character of wherever it is grown while still maintaining its identity. A regal variety of incredible purity and precision, this versatile grape can be just as enjoyable dry or sweet, young or old, still or sparkling and can age longer than nearly any other white variety. Somm Secret—Given how difficult it is to discern the level of sweetness in a Riesling from the label, here are some clues to find the dry ones. First, look for the world “trocken.” (“Halbtrocken” or “feinherb” mean off-dry.) Also a higher abv usually indicates a drier Riesling.
