Waimea means ‘river gardens’ in New Zealand’s indigenous Maori language. The Waimea Plains lie on rich, fertile, alluvial soil just a short distance from the shores of Tasman Bay in Nelson, which is regularly recorded as New Zealand’s sunniest spot. The vineyard sites have a sheltered topography providing protection from strong winds, and the coastal proximity ensures an afternoon sea-breeze appears like clockwork – keeping frost-risk at bay and temperatures moderate. Warm days, cool nights and deep stony soils make for perfectly ripe fruit, fresh acidity with minerality and excellent flavor concentration – distinctive wines from a distinctive terroir.

Nestled in Nelson’s sheltered Waimea Plains, Waimea makes a range of vibrant wines inspired by the abundance of flavors from the region. Waimea means ‘river gardens’ in Maori and Waimea's award-winning wines have a distinctive alluvial quality. They are perfect for pairing with fresh local produce.

Gewürztraminer, an expressive and aromatically distinctive white grape variety, is considered a noble variety in the Alsace region of France, and produces wonderful wines in the mountainous Alto Adige region of NE Italy. Generally this grape grows well in cooler regions and its natural intensity makes it a great ally for flavorful cuisine such as Indian, Middle Eastern or Moroccan. Somm Secret—Because of a charming perfume and tendency towards slight sweetness, Gewürztraminer makes for an excellent gateway wine for those who love sweet wines but want to venture into the realm of drier whites.

Rolling hills evolve from a scenic coastline to form an ideal setting for Sauvignon Blanc vineyards. Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay rank in after New Zealand’s prized varietal as most widely planted in Nelson. The region is slightly cooler and has more precipitation on average compared to Marlborough.
