Winemaker Notes

The wine is deep burgundy color in the glass, with bright red undertones. The nose is expressive and refined, with black plum, malted chocolate, graphite, and the spiciness of toasted French oak – nutmeg, cinnamon, and clove. In the mouth, the wine is densely textured, with volatile, rich flavors of ripe black cherries, blackberries, dark chocolate and freshly ground espresso. The finish is lengthy and perfumed with the smoke of sweetly charred French oak.

The 2014 Proprietary Red Terzetto is equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, all co-fermented from the Eisele vineyards in Chiles Valley. A classy, complex blend with blue, red and black fruits, a hint of charcoal and background oak, plenty of spice, medium to full body, but well-integrated acidity, tannin, alcohol and wood. They have been making this wine probably as long as I have been writing about wine. It is a beauty that can be approached now or cellared for another 15 or more years.

Aromas of blackberries, chocolate and hints of roasted coffee beans. Full body, round tannins and a juicy finish. Plenty of fruit, yet this is soft and delicious. More fruity style. Drink or hold.

This is made from one-third each Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, all grown from the producer's estate vineyards in remote Chiles Valley. It's beautifully floral and soft, with a mix of candied plum, coffee and dried herb. Dusty, balanced and juicy, it is a lovely representation of elegance and quiet power. Editors' Choice

Undoubtedly proving its merit over and over, Napa Valley is a now a leading force in the world of prestigious red wine regions. Though Cabernet Sauvignon dominates Napa Valley, other red varieties certainly thrive here. Important but often overlooked include Merlot and other Bordeaux varieties well-regarded on their own as well as for their blending capacities. Very old vine Zinfandel represents an important historical stronghold for the region and Pinot noir is produced in the cooler southern parts, close to the San Pablo Bay.

Perfectly situated running north to south, the valley acts as a corridor, pulling cool, moist air up from the San Pablo Bay in the evenings during the hot days of the growing season, which leads to even and slow grape ripening. Furthermore the valley claims over 100 soil variations including layers of volcanic, gravel, sand and silt—a combination excellent for world-class red wine production.
