Winemaker Notes

Reminiscent of classic ripe-vintage Bordeaux - refined and well defined with a lovely play of savory and sweet. Cassis, black cherry, and blackberry fruit is accompanied by opulent notes of dark chocolate, espresso roast, and graphite. Silky tannins with amazing richness on the palate.

Wine Enthusiast

This attractively priced 100% varietal red is aged in French oak, 50% of it new, an impressive addition to the flavors in the wine. Cherry-covered chocolate richness is complemented by a bright thread of acidity and tension in this structured, complex wine.

Valravn, California
Valravn Harvest 2018 at Valvran Winery Image
Zinfandel is America's true heritage varietal, like Pinot Noir is to Burgundy and Cabernet is to Bordeaux. This noble grape has been in California since the 1850's, surviving two World Wars and the dark days of Prohibition. Over the years, Valravn has seen this great grape become bastardized and commercialized by massive wineries wanting to making sub-par wine. Along with a small group of peers, Valravn is leading the charge to restore the great reputation of this quintessential American grape. Valravn is born from bush-pruned vines ranging in age from 50 to 105-years-old. Hand harvesting each vineyard parcel allows for selection of only the most pristine bunches. Grapes were hand sorted and gently destemmed before fermentation.

While Sonoma County is acclaimed—and rightfully so—for its Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs, and Zinfandels, it also produces exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon. Of the region’s 18 American Viticultural Areas, only a handful produce top-notch Cabernet Sauvignon. These appellations include Alexander Valley, Knights Valley, Sonoma Valley and Dry Creek Valley. Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignons made in these appellations can offer a complex array of aromas and flavors. Fruit notes such as blackberry, blackcurrant, cassis, black cherry and raspberry often are accompanied by hints of graphite, dusty earth, cigar box, toast and vanilla. The varietal has a rich history in Sonoma, and some of these Cabernet Sauvignons and Cabernet-based blends rival the best from Napa Valley.
