Winemaker Notes

Deep dark red color. Lovely intense nose with aromas of cassis, scorched earth, licorice and provincial herbs.

Classic regal Cabernet, this wine bursts onto the palate and rolls across the tongue with focus and density. Classic firm Cabernet tannins with lovely fruit weight, the flavors gently roll with the tannins to a long penetrating and intense finish.

Critical Acclaim

JH 94
Australian Wine Companion
The Two Hands wines of this second tier have much to commend them, notably freshness and vitality. This is McLaren Vale cabernet with a regional dark chocolate twist, but the redcurrant and cassis is the heart of the wine, classy tannins and a dab of oak the icing on the cake.
WS 93
Wine Spectator
Ripe, round and generous, with raspberry and black cherry fruit at the core, shaded by spicy, toasty, herbal nuances. Has depth and presence, and the finish doesn't quit. Drink now through 2022. 4,500 cases made.
RP 90
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2012 Sexy Beast Cabernet Sauvignon is intensely scented of blackcurrant cordial, blueberry preserves and menthol with hints of fertile earth and bay leaf. Full-bodied with a great concentration of blackberry-laced mid palate fruit, it has a medium level of fine-grained tannins and refreshing acidity. It finishes long. Drink it now to 2018+. 90+

Two Hands Wines, McLaren Vale, Australia
Image of winery
Two Hands Wines was founded in 1999 by Michael Twelftree and Richard Mintz. Their aim was, and still is, to produce the best possible wines from prized Shiraz growng regions throughout Australia. "Quality without compromise" is a core value that drives all decisions from fruit and oak selection to packaging and promotion. Winemaker Matt Wenk has been with Two Hands since 2002 and, together with Michael Twelftree, oversees every aspect of the winemaking process. Their flagship Shiraz, Ares, represents the very best parcels in each vintage and is selected through an intense barrel classification process. This blend of Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale Shiraz displays the incredible depth of flavor and balance that are hallmarks of this wine.

McLaren Vale

View all wine

Known for opulent red wines with intense power and concentration, McLaren Vale is home to perhaps the most “classic” style of Australian Shiraz. Vinified on its own or in Rhône blends with Grenache and Mourvèdre, these hot-climate wines are deeply colored and high in extract and alcohol, with signature hints of dark chocolate and licorice. Cabernet Sauvignon is also produced in a similar style, as are ripe, tropical-fruited Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

Cabernet Sauvignon

View all wine

A noble variety bestowed with both power and concentration, Cabernet Sauvignon is sometimes referred to as the “king” of red grapes. It can be somewhat unapproachable early in its youth but has the potential to age beautifully, with the ability to last fifty years or more at its best. Small berries and tough skins provide its trademark firm tannic grip, while high acidity helps to keep the wine fresh for decades. Cabernet Sauvignon flourishes in temperate climates like Bordeaux's Medoc region (and in St-Emillion and Pomerol, where it plays a supporting role to Merlot). The top Médoc producers use Cabernet Sauvignon for their wine’s backbone, blending it with Merlot and smaller amounts of Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and/or Petit Verdot. On its own, Cabernet Sauvignon has enjoyed great success throughout the world, particularly in the Napa Valley, and is responsible for some of the world’s most prestigious and sought-after “cult” wines.

In the Glass

High in color, tannin, and extract, Cabernet Sauvignon expresses notes of blackberry, cassis, plum, currant, spice, and tobacco. In Bordeaux and elsewhere in the Old World you'll find the more earthy, tannic side of Cabernet, where it's typically blended to soften tannins and add complexity. In warmer regions like California and Australia, you can typically expect more ripe fruit flavors upfront.

Perfect Pairings

Cabernet Sauvignon is right at home with rich, intense meat dishes—beef, lamb, and venison, in particular—where its opulent fruit and decisive tannins make an equal match to the dense protein of the meat. With a mature Cabernet, opt for tender, slow-cooked meat dishes.

Sommelier Secrets

Despite the modern importance and ubiquity of Cabernet Sauvignon, it is actually a relatively young variety. In 1997, DNA revealed the grape to be a spontaneous crossing of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc which took place in 17th century southwestern France.
