Winemaker Notes

True to the vibrant character of the 2015 vintage, our 2015 Oakville Reserve returns with enthralling verve and freshness.

A dynamic opulence of dark fruit expression thrills the olfactory sense to reveal a taut, widening plane of lifted red fruit on the palate. Bewitching dark blue fruit tones drive an energetic, but focused depth and length through the finish.

This is a grainy, herbal red wine, boldly tannic and softly smooth in texture. It takes on mountain airs of sage, clove and tobacco, with a brushy graininess that adds complexity and intrigue. Blackberry, black cherry and currant give a tart fruitiness to the flavor.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville Reserve has a baked black cherries, black berries and wild blueberries-scented nose with hints of lavender, pencil shavings and earth plus a touch of cloves. The palate is full-bodied and bursting with black berry and earthy flavors, supported by soft, rounded tannins and finishing with a hint of pepper.

The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville Reserve offers lots of blackcurrant and blueberry fruit as well as notes of graphite, licorice, and scorched earth. Picking up a distinct violet character with time in the glass, it has full-bodied richness, a concentrated, firm, structured style, good acidity, and a great finish. It’s a backward, structured, potential-packed beauty that needs 3-4 years of bottle age and will keep for two decades.

COMMENTARY: Over the decades, I have been a fan of the elegant style of the Turnbull wines. While the wines are often ultra-rich, they always show excellent structure. The 2015 Turnbull Oakville Reserve is beautifully balanced. TASTING NOTES: This wine exhibits superb richness and structure. Its aromas and flavors of ripe red and black fruits, with a nifty accent of oak, should make it a lovely pairing partner with grilled lamb chops. (Tasted: September 17, 2018, San Francisco, CA)

Plenty of burnt-orange character as well as some ripe stemminess, underbrush, licorice and tar. There's quite a lot of plum fruit on the palate, but the acidity lifts the full body and round, juicy tannins to the long finish. Drink in 2021.

In the Spring of 1993 California publisher, Patrick O'Dell, purchased Johnson Turnbull Vineyards and renamed the property Turnbull Wine Cellars. The remodeling and expansion of the facility has been completed. In addition, the wines have gone through change due to the inclusion of fruit from additional vineyards purchased by Patrick. Turnbull Wine Cellars has 145 acres of vineyards within the Oakville and Calistoga districts of Napa Valley representing a diverse range of microclimates and terroirs within these fabled grape-growing centers of Napa Valley.

A noble variety bestowed with both power and concentration, Cabernet Sauvignon enjoys success all over the globe, its best examples showing potential to age beautifully for decades. Cabernet Sauvignon flourishes in Bordeaux's Medoc where it is often blended with Merlot and smaller amounts of some combination of Cabernet Franc, Malbecand Petit Verdot. In the Napa Valley, ‘Cab’ is responsible for some of the world’s most prestigious, age-worthy and sought-after “cult” wines. Somm Secret—DNA profiling in 1997 revealed that Cabernet Sauvignon was born from a spontaneous crossing of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc in 17th century southwest France.

Home to some of the most sought-after Cabernet Sauvignon in America, Napa Valley’s Oakville district stretches across the center of Napa's valley floor and foothills between the Vaca and Mayacamas Mountains. This AVA is home to the legendary To Kalon Vineyard and Martha's Vineyard, as well as many powerhouse wineries including Screaming Eagle, Silver Oak, Robert Mondavi, Opus One, Far Niente and Groth.

The climate is generally warm and agreeable, resulting in year after year of favorable vintages. Summer days see a gentle tug of war between warmer inland air and the cool air coming in from the San Pablo Bay, creating an ideal environment to grow red varieties. Oakville's diverse soils, namely ancient sea bedrock, clay and gravel, are well-drained, and perfect for high-caliber viticulture.

Cabernet here is often bottled varietally but is also popular in Bordeaux Blends. Oakville wines are known for their silky, sensual textures, structured tannins, dark and brooding fruit and lovely aromatics. These age-worthy and prestigious wines are favored by collectors throughout the world.
