Winemaker Notes

Deep purple in color, Redigaffi offers luscious layers of blueberry jam, ripe plum and blackberry, followed by voluptuous notes of dark chocolate, licorice, black pepper, vanilla and incense. Full-bodied and lush on the palate with polished tannins and an extra-long finish, Redigaffi is one of Italy’s greatest Merlots. A true masterpiece.

This wine pairs beautifully with dark-fruit chutney sauces, kalamata olive tapenade, Chateaubriand, and grilled pepper-crusted sirloins.

2014 was one of the coolest and rainiest vintages ever on the Tuscan coast. According to Tua Rita they were saved by the winds blowing in from the sea, which 'came to the rescue and dried the grapes, helping to prevent rot.' There are dark fruit flavours and aromas of sweet, ripe blackberry, apple tart and smoke. It has a really pretty weight and texture and a feeling of lightness and ease, yet there's plenty of concentration and intensity. The tannins are a little firmer, as you might expect in a vintage such as this. A lovely example of 2014 in Tuscany.

Fantastic aromas of red pepper, chocolate, chili, and blueberry. Medium to full body, fine tannins and a beautiful length and balance. A triumph for a difficult vintage in 2014. And the 20th vintage of this great pure merlot made. I am not sure I would wait on this one. Too delicious now.

Of the wines tasted in this historic retrospective, this is the bottle that most surprised and delighted me. The Tua Rita 2014 Redigaffi is a real showstopper with an assembly of fresh and especially aromatic fruit and floral details. The wine is medium lean in consistency, as you might expect from one of the coolest (and wettest) vintages that coastal Tuscany has seen in our lifetimes. There is wild cherry, cranberry, violet, lavender, mint, white pepper, dried spice and the list could go on. I'm giving it a higher score than I gave on the occasion of my first tasting many years ago.

A dense, sinewy style, whose black cherry, toast, vanilla and cedar flavors are wrapped in a cloak of spicy oak. Shows a supple texture and good balance, set on a linear profile. Minerally, with terrific length. Merlot. Best from 2019 through 2028.

Legendary in Italy for its Renaissance art and striking landscape, Tuscany is also home to many of the country’s best red wines. Sangiovese reigns supreme here, as either the single varietal, or a dominant player, in almost all of Tuscany’s best.

A remarkable Chianti, named for its region of origin, will have a bright acidity, supple tannins and plenty of cherry fruit character. From the hills and valleys surrounding the medieval village of Montalcino, come the distinguished and age-worthy wines based on Brunello (Sangiovese). Earning global acclaim since the 1970s, the Tuscan Blends are composed solely of international grape varieties or a mix of international and Sangiovese. The wine called Vine Nobile di Montepulciano, composed of Prognolo Gentile (Sangiovese) and is recognized both for finesse and power.
