Winemaker Notes

Aromas of coffee and black cherry with hints of bay leaf carry through onto the palate lengthening the flavor profile. Firm tannins build alongside flavors of ripe plum fruit and walnut in this classic Napa Cabernet.

Serve with beef, lamb and game dishes, especially those incorporating oregano, thyme, mushrooms and black pepper.

Wine Enthusiast
A great, upscale wine to drink now with the best you can pair it with. It shows classic Napa character, with firm, dry tannins, fine acidity and blackberry and black currant flavors. It’s almost entirely Cabernet Sauvignon, with tiny additions of other Bordeaux varieties. Give it a good decant, or cellar it for 5–7 years and see what happens.

Wow. Lots of blueberry and raspberry aromas here, with mint too. Full body, with fine and silky tannins and plenty of fruit and mint character. Fascinating wine. Balanced and pretty. Best after 2014.

Connoisseurs' Guide
From its keen curranty fruit to its very solid, tannin-firmed frame to its complexing touches of briar and loam, this bottling hits all the varietal marks smartly, and it is a fine cameo of what good Napa Cabernet is all about. It is, however, nowhere close to yet showing its best, and the challenging astringency that washes through its finish is also the stuff of young Cabernet. Its fruit is still standing well after the count and will comfortably keep this noteworthy youngster on the right track for the four to six years that it so clearly deserves.

Built in 1886, John and Janet Trefethen began restoring what is today the Trefethen winery in 1973. A national historic landmark and the only wooden gravity-flow winery in the Napa Valley, Trefethen is also one of Napa's largest estate wineries, with its 600 acres of vineyards surrounding the winery. The Trefethen family creates Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Riesling as well as limited quantities of Library Selection Chardonnay, Library Selection Cabernet Sauvignon and Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon.

One of the most prestigious wines of the world capable of great power and grace, Napa Valley Cabernet is a leading force in the world of fine, famous, collectible red wines. Today the Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without the other. But it wasn’t until the 1970s that this marriage came to light; sudden international recognition rained upon Napa with the victory of the Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1976 Judgement of Paris.

Cabernet Sauvignon undoubtedly dominates Napa Valley today, covering half of the land under vine, commanding the highest prices per ton and earning the most critical acclaim. Cabernet Sauvignon’s structure, acidity, capacity to thrive in multiple environs and ability to express nuances of vintage make it perfect for Napa Valley where incredible soil and geographical diversity are found and the climate is perfect for grape growing. Within the Napa Valley lie many smaller sub-AVAs that express specific characteristics based on situation, slope and soil—as a perfect example, Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
