Winemaker Notes

A Malbec of deep red color with ruby hues. Intense aromas of dark fruit with notes of smoke, mint, spices, thyme, graphite, and licorice. In the mouth, it is fruity and minerally with gripping tannins and a lingering finish.

An intense but restrained nose with plenty of blue fruit, violets, ink, a hint of graphite and some ash. Full-bodied but sleek and refined on the palate. I love the cohesion of the tannins, which creates impressive tension and linearity. Long and energetic.

The Terroir Series wines are reds with character. This Malbec comes from a vineyard in Gualtallary and opens with light notes of chalk, black cherry and clove. The palate offers vivid rosemary, black fruit and cocoa bean over a mineral texture.

The 2020 Malbec Terroir Series Finca Ambrosía originates from Gualtallary in the Uco Valley and was aged for 18 months in French oak barrels. A rich purple in the glass. The nose presents ripe plum, blackberry, orange peel and herb aromas. The wine is plush with clingy, fairly dry tannins that bring liqueur-like energy. Rich, dark fruit flavors linger at length.

Dense and structured, this red benefits from air, because there's some elegance underneath the muscle, offering floral thyme and chocolate-covered raspberry and black cherry notes, with spice and mineral details filling out the finish. Drink now through 2036. 1,000 cases made, 115 cases imported.

Celebrated for its bold flavors and supple texture, Malbec has enjoyed runaway success in Argentina since the late 20th century. The grape originated in Bordeaux, France, where it historically contributed color and tannin to blends. A French agronomist, who saw great potential for the variety in Mendoza’s hot, high-altitude landscape, brought Malbec to Argentina in 1868. Somm Secret—If you’re trying to please a crowd, Malbec is generally a safe bet with its combination of dense fruit and soft tannins.

With a winning combination of cool weather, high elevation and well-draining alluvial soils, it is no surprise that Mendoza’s Uco Valley is one of the most exciting up-and-coming wine regions in Argentina. Healthy, easy-to-manage vines produce low yields of high-quality fruit, which in turn create flavorful, full-bodied wines with generous acidity.

This is the source of some of the best Malbec in Mendoza, which can range from value-priced to ultra-premium. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Chardonnay also perform well here.
