    Winemaker Notes

Tomasello Ranier Red is a moderately sweet red wine with the taste of freshly picked grapes. It is very fruity and intense in its grape character and is made primarily from the Native American grape Concord. With a dessert sweetness level, it is perfect with walnuts and stilton cheese. Made every year at the Winery for over 60 years, it enjoys a very loyal following. For the sweeter palette, it is the most intense of the Ranier wines.

    Tomasello Winery
Tomasello Winery is a small third-generation family Winery founded in 1933. Currently, the Winery produces over thirty different wines from grapes it grows on seventy acres. Its traditional wines include an Atlantic County Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Chambourcin and Villard Noir as well as Never Oak Chardonnay to name a few. These Regional wines have garnered a number of awards and medals and are currently available in selected markets.

The Winery is perhaps best known, however, for the ”Tomasello Fruit Wine Portfolio”, a line of 100% naturally fermented fruit wines (Red Raspberry, Blackberry, Blueberry, Cranberry and Cherry) which are sold throughout the US and exported to a number of foreign countries. These wines are intense in their fruit character and are used as dessert wines, reduced in the sauté pan for entrée sauces, incorporated into baking recipes, in mixed drink concoctions and in kirs with sparkling wines.

    Paso Robles

    View all wine

Paso Robles has made a name for itself as a source of supple, fruity, and powerful wines. With 11 smaller sub-AVAs, there is quite a bit of diversity to be found in this inland portion of California’s Central Coast.

This is mostly red wine country, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel standing out as the star performers. Other popular varieties include Merlot, Petite Sirah, Petit Verdot, and Rhône varieties both red and white. There is a fairly uniform tendency here towards wines that are unapologetically bold and opulently fruity, albeit with a surprising amount of acidity thanks to the region’s chilly nighttime temperatures.

    Grenache

    View all wine

Full-bodied but light in both color and tannin, Grenache loves the sun. It thrives in hot climates where it can easily achieve full ripeness. Grenache is best known in the Southern Rhône, where its plush texture and ample alcohol are tamed by savory Syrah and structured Mourvèdre, most notably in Côtes du Rhône and Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Grenache originates in Spain, where it is known as Garnacha and is important throughout the country, particularly in Rioja, where it is blended with the more austere Tempranillo, and in Priorat in tandem with savory Cariñena (Carignan). It is also responsible for dry, fruity rosés in Navarra. In Sardinia, the variety is known as Cannonau and produces bold, rustic reds. In California, Grenache has achieved popularity both flying solo and playing a supporting role in Rhône-style blends.

    In the Glass

In sufficiently warm conditions, Grenache produces smooth and generous wines that are loaded with red fruit flavors ranging from strawberry to cherry to dark berry. Richer examples can also show plum, chocolate, and licorice.

    Perfect Pairings

Despite its bold flavors, Grenache has very mild-mannered tannins, which makes it eminently quaffable on its own, yet easy to match with food. With its uncomplicated, friendly nature, Grenache is the ultimate barbecue red, pairing happily with lamb loin chops or spicy Italian sausages. Unlike most other full-bodied reds, Grenache’s low tannin level ensures that it will not be fazed by a good chili kick.

    Sommelier Secret

Sardinia’s Cannonau is often revered for its association with a long, healthy life. Residents of the Italian island often live well into their 90s and beyond, and they credit this antioxidant-rich wine—along with their healthy Mediterranean diet—for their impressive longevity.
