Winemaker Notes

The wine boasts an intense ruby red color. The aroma opens with a bouquet of ripe red fruits and is enriched with tomato leaf, pepper and slight herbal nuances. Intense, fresh and elegant on the palate.

Blend: 50% Merlot, 30% Petit Verdot, 20% Cabernet Franc

Very cabernet franc nose with currants, leaves and tobacco, following through to a medium-bodied palate with a very fluid and silky mouth-feel. The tannins are beautifully integrated, giving the delicious fruit a free run through the finish. Not a big wine, but extremely well crafted and fluid. Cabernet franc, merlot and cabernet sauvignon. From organically grown grapes. Delicious. Irresistible now.

This red shows precision and focus to its black currant, black cherry, rosemary, bell pepper and iron aromas and flavors. Linear and intense, with fine equilibrium and a solid structure. Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Syrah. Drink now through 2030.

I find the 2019 Le Colenne much more appealing on the nose, with notes of Mediterranean herbs, cherry liqueur, pine, and fresh lavender. The palate is well-balanced and full-bodied, with ripe tannins, fresh acidity, notes of dusty earth, and a fairly long finish.

One of the world’s most classic and popular styles of red wine, Bordeaux-inspired blends have spread from their homeland in France to nearly every corner of the New World. Typically based on either Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot and supported by Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot, the best of these are densely hued, fragrant, full of fruit and boast a structure that begs for cellar time. Somm Secret—Blends from Bordeaux are generally earthier compared to those from the New World, which tend to be fruit-dominant.

An outstanding wine region made famous by Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, who planted Cabernet Sauvignon vines for his own consumption in 1940s on his San Guido estate, and called the resulting wine, Sassicaia. Today the region’s Tuscan reds are based on Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, which can be made as single varietal wines or blends. The local Sangiovese can make up no more than 50% of the blends. Today Sassicaia has its own DOC designation within the Bogheri DOC appellation.
