A fresh and vivid young Tuscan red with currant and mineral aromas that follow through to a medium to full body with crunchy tannins and a vivid finish. Creamy texture. A little tight at the end. Second wine of Trinoro. A blend of cabernet franc, cabernet sauvignon, merlot and petit verdot. Give it time to open. Best after 2026.

A blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, the Tenuta di Trinoro 2022 Le Cupole remains one of Italy's greatest value buys, especially for fans of concentrated, sun-drenched Tuscan reds. The fruit is ripe, but not overripe, and there are thick layers of blackcurrant and Morello cherry at the core. These are framed by toasted spice and cinnamon. The wine is medium to full-bodied, although the ample fruit weight gives this vintage a bigger overall mouthfeel.

Displaying a youthful magenta/ruby color, the 2022 Le Cupole is a blend of 57% Merlot, 26% Cabernet Franc, 11% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the remainder Petit Verdot. It was aged for eight months in barriques, followed by an additional 12 months in concrete tanks before bottling. In the glass, it reveals a ripe floral perfume of preserved strawberries, baked cherries, vanilla, crushed flowers, and sage. Full-bodied, it offers plush tannins, ripe acidity, and a savory finish. It's approachable and provides a lot of immediate pleasure, yet it should also easily drink well for another decade.

The hot and dry 2022 vintage was a challenge for many producers, including Tenuta di Trinoro, where canopy management was essential to shade the bunches, and a green harvest reduced the load on the vines. This blend of 57% Merlot, 26% Cabernet Franc, 11% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Petit Verdot has gorgeous dark berry aromas with pretty floral overtones. In the mouth it's focussed and vertical, with crunchy red and black berries and a balsamic overtone, finishing with plenty of spice and a long, bright line of acidity.

I've always had a bias toward the Sicilian branch of the Franchetti wines—they're so agile and precise—but the Tuscan 2022 Le Cupole, ultra-crunchy, spicy, textured, could lure me north any day.

This is polished and exudes black cherry, blackberry, cedar and sweet spice flavors. Also dense, with a line of tannins leaving a light dusting on the finish. Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2036. 7,500 cases made, 2,083 cases imported.

Legendary in Italy for its Renaissance art and striking landscape, Tuscany is also home to many of the country’s best red wines. Sangiovese reigns supreme here, as either the single varietal, or a dominant player, in almost all of Tuscany’s best.

A remarkable Chianti, named for its region of origin, will have a bright acidity, supple tannins and plenty of cherry fruit character. From the hills and valleys surrounding the medieval village of Montalcino, come the distinguished and age-worthy wines based on Brunello (Sangiovese). Earning global acclaim since the 1970s, the Tuscan Blends are composed solely of international grape varieties or a mix of international and Sangiovese. The wine called Vine Nobile di Montepulciano, composed of Prognolo Gentile (Sangiovese) and is recognized both for finesse and power.
