Winemaker Notes

Campo di Magnacosta was the first of our three Cabernet Franc Cru born in 2011 from an idea of Andrea Franchetti that was to enhance the characteristics of a precise terroir. Campo di Magnacosta is a 1.5-hectare parcel of river gravel and silt on the valley's bottom, where an old stream ate into a hill (Magna: eat; Costa: hillside). It was planted over 20 years ago with cuttings from a vineyard in Pomerol where Cabernet Franc has grown for three centuries.

This lively red is round in profile, exhibiting red fruit flavors of cherry, raspberry and pomegranate. Iron and licorice notes chime in as this gives way to dense, lightly chewy tannins on the finish.

The most powerful of three single-vineyard Cabernet Franc-based wines in this series is the Tenuta di Trinoro 2021 Campo di Magnacosta. Aside from the very high 16% alcohol content, this wine is also very elegant and poised with a compact and dense quality of fruit and pretty mineral tones at the back of blackcurrant, toasted chestnut husk and earthy iris root. The wine is muscle and brawn, but it also reveals pretty elegance.

Legendary in Italy for its Renaissance art and striking landscape, Tuscany is also home to many of the country’s best red wines. Sangiovese reigns supreme here, as either the single varietal, or a dominant player, in almost all of Tuscany’s best.

A remarkable Chianti, named for its region of origin, will have a bright acidity, supple tannins and plenty of cherry fruit character. From the hills and valleys surrounding the medieval village of Montalcino, come the distinguished and age-worthy wines based on Brunello (Sangiovese). Earning global acclaim since the 1970s, the Tuscan Blends are composed solely of international grape varieties or a mix of international and Sangiovese. The wine called Vine Nobile di Montepulciano, composed of Prognolo Gentile (Sangiovese) and is recognized both for finesse and power.
