Winemaker Notes

Talbott's signature Pinot Noir crafted from a selection of their finest blocks from our renowned Sleepy Hollow Vineyard located in the Santa Lucia Highlands of California. This wine is produced using half old-vine (planted in 1972) Martini clone Pinot Noir grapes and Dijon clone Pinot Noir grapes (ranging in age 15-20 years). Barrel aged 10 months in French oak, 30% new. Full bodied, rich texture with flavors of Bing cherry and red plum leading to a long finish with vanilla oak and lively acidity.

WW 93
Wilfred Wong of Wine.com
A rare commodity, yes indeed it is when one can discover a truly outstanding pinot noir in the $40.00 range. The varietal has become so precious and sought after that their market value has simply skyrocketed. The 2012 Talbott Sleepy Hollow begins with an out-of-this-world aroma; wild strawberries with a hint of sweet oak; lavish, yet well balanced on the palate; smooth and serious in the finish. Perhaps time to roast a leg of lamb, what do you think?

Talbott Winery Video

Founded in 1982 by Robert Talbott this vineyard crafts luxurious, estate-grown Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in Monterey County’s prestigious Santa Lucia Highlands AVA. Talbott Vineyards is defined by its iconic Sleepy Hollow Vineyard, where conditions are ideal for exceptional, cool-climate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Sleepy Hollow surrounds the estate winery in the breathtaking foothills of the Santa Lucia Highlands, affording the winemaking team, led by Winemaker David Coventry, the luxury of control with both their grapes and winery on the same site.

The largest and perhaps most varied of California’s wine-growing regions, the Central Coast produces a good majority of the state's wine. This vast district stretches from San Francisco all the way to Santa Barbara along the coast, and reaches inland nearly all the way to the Central Valley.

Encompassing an extremely diverse array of climates, soil types and wine styles, it contains many smaller sub-AVAs, including San Francisco Bay, Monterey, the Santa Cruz Mountains, Paso Robles, Edna Valley, Santa Ynez Valley and Santa Maria Valley.

While the region could probably support almost any major grape varietiy, it is famous for a few. Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel are among the major ones. The Central Coast is home to many of the state's small, artisanal wineries crafting unique, high-quality wines, as well as larger producers also making exceptional wines.

Thin-skinned, finicky and temperamental, Pinot Noir is also one of the most rewarding grapes to grow and remains a labor of love for some of the greatest vignerons in Burgundy. Fairly adaptable but highly reflective of the environment in which it is grown, Pinot Noir prefers a cool climate and requires low yields to achieve high quality. Outside of France, outstanding examples come from in Oregon, California and throughout specific locations in wine-producing world. Somm Secret—André Tchelistcheff, California’s most influential post-Prohibition winemaker decidedly stayed away from the grape, claiming “God made Cabernet. The Devil made Pinot Noir.”
