Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

A lovely, creamy nose of wildflower honey, sweet baking spices, citrus pith, and briny minerality. The mouth is textured and dry, with both the richness and essence of egg custard, flavors of quince and pear, and a long finish with echoing honey, fresh vanilla bean, and limestone mineral notes. A powerful, textured Esprit Blanc that is drinking well now but which we expect will really shine with time in the cellar. Drink over the next two decades.

Blend: 63% Roussanne, 20% Grenache Blanc, 14% Picpoul Blanc, 3% Picardan

Ideal food pairings include cooked shellfish, roasted or grilled vegetables, stir fry dishes, and rich fish dishes.

Professional Ratings

  • 93

Lush and minerally, this wine is led by the richness of Roussanne and the crispness of Grenache Blanc and Picpoul Blanc.

  • 92

The 2019 Esprit de Tablas Blanc is made primarily from Roussanne, blended with 20% Grenache Blanc, 14% Picpoul Blanc and 3% Picardin. It has a very pretty spiced apple perfume, with touches of musk and white flowers, honey and apricots. The palate is pleasantly lifted and tangy at this stage, hinting at broader, more savory tones to come with time in the bottle.

  • 90

The 2019 Esprit De Tablas Blanc is rock-solid, with crisp white peach, pineapple, and lemon-laced aromatics to go with a medium-bodied, elegant style on the palate. A blend of 63% Roussanne, 20% Grenache Blanc, 14% Picpoul, and the rest Picardan, drink this floral, balanced, outstanding white over the coming decade.

Tablas Creek Vineyard, California
Tablas Creek Vineyard Tablas Creek Winery Winery Image

Tablas Creek is a pioneer of California’s Rhone movement. Founded in 1989, it is the culmination of a friendship between two of the international wine community’s leading families dating back to 1967: the Perrin family of Chateau de Beaucastel and the Haas family of Vineyard Brands. After a four-year search, the partners chose Paso Robles, California for its many similarities to the Southern Rhone and began the lengthy process of importing vine cuttings, building a grapevine nursery, and creating an estate vineyard from the ground up. Today, the vineyards at Tablas Creek are proudly Biodynamic® and organic certified by Demeter USA.

Full-bodied and flavorful, white Rhône blends originate from France’s Rhône Valley. Today these blends are also becoming popular in other regions. Typically some combination of Grenache Blanc, Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier form the basis of a white Rhône blend with varying degrees of flexibility depending on the exact appellation. Somm Secret—In the Northern Rhône, blends of Marsanne and Roussanne are common but the south retains more variety. Marsanne, Roussanne as well as Bourboulenc, Clairette, Picpoul and Ugni Blanc are typical.

The largest and perhaps most varied of California’s wine-growing regions, the Central Coast produces a good majority of the state's wine. This vast California wine district stretches from San Francisco all the way to Santa Barbara along the coast, and reaches inland nearly all the way to the Central Valley.

Encompassing an extremely diverse array of climates, soil types and wine styles, it contains many smaller sub-AVAs, including San Francisco Bay, Monterey, the Santa Cruz Mountains, Paso Robles, Edna Valley, Santa Ynez Valley and Santa Maria Valley.

While the Central Coast California wine region could probably support almost any major grape varietiy, it is famous for a few Central Coast reds and whites. Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel are among the major ones. The Central Coast is home to many of the state's small, artisanal wineries crafting unique, high-quality wines, as well as larger producers also making exceptional wines.
