Winemaker Notes
The nose of the 2022 Reserve Pinot Noir is warm and rich with dense layers of ripe red fruit, savory spice, and earthy undertones. The palate is luscious with juicy plum, ripe black cherry, and baking spice on top of a foundation of mushroom and forest floor. There is ample acidity and pleasing tannins to keep the juicy nature of this wine fresh and lively with each re-visit.

A combination of dusty blackberry, violets and earthy forest floor aromas gives you the feeling that you are picking fruit from wild vines at the edge of the woods. The beautiful balance between energetic acidity and firm tannins is the backdrop for blackberry pie, black tea and sage flavors. Texture as elegant as a silk glove is the blackberry on top for this impressive reserve wine.

A youthful red color, the 2022 Pinot Noir Reserve leads with notes of red cherries, cinnamon, pressed roses, and refined hints of mushroomy earth. It’s medium-bodied, with a lovely, graceful feel, and features a well-managed fruitiness and openness characteristic of the Dundee Hills, yet without feeling heavy. It’s a highly appealing wine now, though it should also drink well over the next 7-10 years. It was aged for 10 months in 35% new French oak barrels, followed by an additional four months in stainless steel before bottling.

Thin-skinned, finicky and temperamental, Pinot Noir is also one of the most rewarding grapes to grow and remains a labor of love for some of the greatest vignerons in Burgundy. Fairly adaptable but highly reflective of the environment in which it is grown, Pinot Noir prefers a cool climate and requires low yields to achieve high quality. Outside of France, outstanding examples come from in Oregon, California and throughout specific locations in wine-producing world. Somm Secret—André Tchelistcheff, California’s most influential post-Prohibition winemaker decidedly stayed away from the grape, claiming “God made Cabernet. The Devil made Pinot Noir.”
Home of the first Pinot noir vineyard of the Willamette Valley, planted by David Lett of Eyrie Vineyard in 1966, today the Dundee Hills AVA remains the most densely planted AVA in the valley (and state). To its north sits the Chehalem Valley and to its south, runs the Willamette River. Within the region’s 12,500 acres, about 1,700 are planted to vine on predominantly basalt-based, volcanic, Jory soil.
