Winemaker Notes

The vintage season of 2000 started out on a very good note. Adequate rainfall followed by warm spring weather had the vines off to a good, healthy start. Budbreak and bloom were at a more normal time than the two previous late years. Full bloom was from the third week of May into early June accompanied by moderate temperatures resulting in good to excellent fruit set in most varieties. The growing season climate followed fairly typical North Coast patterns with moderate temperatures punctuated by several heat blasts, which caused some crop loss.

Purple, ruby color introduces the new Dijon clones that are so evident in the 2000 vintage. Dense rich candy apple and red cherry aromas are teased by cinnamon stick. Juicy bright and soft mouthfeel is followed by tart red cherry.

As early as the 1970s Carneros became known as a source of terrific Pinot Noir, and was one of the first California regions to gain such a reputation. The combination of sunny days, cooling fog and thin clay soils are tailor-made for the variety. Another factor in Pinot Noir’s prominent place here is vintners’ willingness to experiment widely. The history of the grape in Carneros is marked by continuous research into clonal variations, viticultural techniques and site selection. Careful evaluation over time has revealed a signature flavor profile as well. Complex aromas and flavors of cherry, red berry, spice, earth and cola appear time and again in Carneros Pinot Noir. To this day the appellation remains one of California’s standard bearers for the variety.
