Winemaker Notes

This blend of our finest red grapes is a structured wine with length and a graceful, fine grain of tannin. Vibrant and deep reds and purples introduce Élu, with aromas of black plum and juicy blackberry. The fragrances of anise, graphite, dark cocoa, espresso and toasted barrel add extra depth and richness.Flavors of black plum and youthful blackberry are complemented with a hint of cassis, together with notes of espresso, black pepper and black licorice.

Winemakers, in the New World, often talk a good game when they claim that they can produce a Bordeaux-style red wine of superior quality. The industry has seen this over and over again. Fortunately, winemaker Michael Scholz has produced a wine that is as solid as they come—the 2013 St. Supéry Élu is a wonderful wine. Shows black fruits, cassis and sweet oak and a lasting finish. This would be my choice for a special occasion wine. Fortunately, this wine is one of the best values in its category. Drinks nicely now and will improve with age. (Tasted: July 27, 2016, San Francisco, CA)

Black currants with sweet tobacco as well as espresso undertones dominate the nose of this Bordeaux blend. On the palate, this wine shows concentration, plenty of tannins and a finish with lots of dark fruits. A blend of 65% cabernet sauvignon, 22% merlot, 9% malbec with the balance of cab franc and petit verdot. Better in two years.

Aims high but remains trim and austere, with measured dark berry, gravelly earth, dried herb and taut cedary oak. Too tightly wound for now, but that austerity merits consideration come dining time. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Best from 2020 through 2030.

This is a blend of all five red Bordeaux varieties, with Cabernet Sauvignon taking the lead position at 65% and Merlot following at 22%. It shows classic characteristics of tart red currant, dried herb and cigar box within a full-bodied richness that's seamlessly smooth.

The diversity of Dollarhide’s terroir contributes to the successful farming of red and white Bordeaux varieties.

The winery in Rutherford is home to winemaking, visitor facilities, and 35 acres planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. All the estate acreage owned by St. Supéry is farmed sustainably using minimal intervention and cultivation. Undoubtedly proving its merit over and over, Napa Valley is a now a leading force in the world of prestigious red wine regions. Though Cabernet Sauvignon dominates Napa Valley, other red varieties certainly thrive here. Important but often overlooked include Merlot and other Bordeaux varieties well-regarded on their own as well as for their blending capacities. Very old vine Zinfandel represents an important historical stronghold for the region and Pinot noir is produced in the cooler southern parts, close to the San Pablo Bay.

Perfectly situated running north to south, the valley acts as a corridor, pulling cool, moist air up from the San Pablo Bay in the evenings during the hot days of the growing season, which leads to even and slow grape ripening. Furthermore the valley claims over 100 soil variations including layers of volcanic, gravel, sand and silt—a combination excellent for world-class red wine production.
