Spellbound Petite Sirah 2012
The outstanding 2012 Petite Sirah is a 21,500-case cuvée of 100% Petite Sirah that was aged in a combination of 60% French oak and 40% stainless steel. While surprisingly soft and civilized for a Petite Sirah, it does not lack for flavor authority or density. Its deep ruby/purple color is followed by notes of blueberries, blackberries, incense and camphor. Meaty, rich and spicy with a hint of road tar, the sweetness of the tannins and the lushness and opulence of the wine are amazing. This tastes like a $30-$40 Petite Sirah, but it's available at less than half that price.
Currently Spellbound makes Petite Sirah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Chardonnay. All three wines are approachable and food-friendly, perfect for causal dinners and black tie functions alike. Because Spellbound wines pair so well with food, they've become a favorite choice of fine restaurants.
The Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without thinking of the other. Although Cabernet has many important outposts throughout the wine world, nowhere else has it achieved such success (and, at the highest end, commanded such lofty prices) than in Napa. Here, it is responsible for bold, opulent, and dark-fruited wines with grippy tannins and a healthy dose of alcohol. The best examples can age for decades. Each of Napa’s smaller sub-AVAs imparts a different character to Cabernet, such as Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
