Winemaker Notes

This 2015 pinot noir is defined by warm days, cold nights and a true presence of place. Helluva Vineyard is tucked up against the waterfall of forest which flows down along the western edge of the valley. It experiences mornings and afternoons which are sun drenched and warm which leads into cooler evenings and the typical cold nights thanks the creek bed which ushers the cold forest air down through the vineyard on a nightly basis. There is a definite sense of where this wine comes from. It has loads of red berry fruit intertwined with baking spices and subtle notes of forest floor and rich mineral. Beautifully expressive not only in the aromatic but on the palate as well. Medium bodied with an elegant texture and a finishing energy which really adds to the layers of dimension. Aged for 10 months in 25% new Burgundy barrels with the balance in 2nd and 3rd use Burgundy barrel. Drinking fantastic now but will only improve over the next 5-7 years.

Anderson Valley, located in Mendocino County just above Sonoma County, is one of California’s coolest AVAs, allowing it a long growing season. Only 15 miles long, the region makes a slice eastward through the mountains, from the frigid Pacific Ocean. Dramatic diurnal temperature variations here preserve grape acidity and thus freshness in the finished wines. These are prime conditions for growing Pinot Noir, and the valley produces many fine versions. Characteristics of Anderson Valley Pinot Noir typically include crisp acidity, cranberry and strawberry notes as well as earthy notes of forest floor and mushroom.

Still Pinot Noir, however, is only part of the story. Pinot Noir, along with Chardonnay, are also grown for Anderson Valley’s exceptional sparkling wines. Produced via the traditional method, these offer a classic toasty note from lees aging, bright, complex fruit notes and a clean, refreshing character.
