    Winemaker Notes

Lush, lively, natural fresh fruit flavors of citrus, peaches and tropical fruits with a slight effervescence that finishes dry due to the natural crisp acidity.

SIP Moscato was founded by long-time friends and wine industry veterans with over 50 years of combined experience in the wine business with one common goal: create the world's premiere Moscato.

Barry Gnekow, the winemaker, is a graduate of UC Davis and has over 30 years of winemaking experience. A legend in the industry, he has pioneered new and innovative winemaking techniques that result in wines of amazing concentration, aromatics and flavor. Barry is currently involved with numerous, highly successful brands, including 7 Deadly Zins, Old Ghost, Klinker Brick, Cycles Gladiator, Earthquake, Educated Guess and, of course, SIP Moscato. Barry was so excited about SIP Moscato that he also became a partner in our venture. The San Francisco Chronicle hailed Barry as one of the best consulting winemakers in the industry. With the numerous accolades and medals earned by his wines throughout the years, Barry is one of California’s most award winning winemakers!

Responsible for the vast majority of American wine production, if California were a country, it would be the world’s fourth largest wine-producing nation. The state’s diverse terrain and microclimates allow for an incredible range of red wine styles, and unlike tradition-bound Europe, experimentation is more than welcome here. California wineries range from tiny, family-owned boutiques to massive corporations, and price and production are equally varied. Plenty of inexpensive bulk wine is made in the Central Valley area, while Napa Valley is responsible for some of the world’s most prestigious and expensive “cult” wines.

Each American Viticultural Area (AVA) and sub-AVA of has its own distinct personality, allowing California to produce red wine of every fashion: from bone dry to unctuously sweet, still to sparkling, light and fresh to rich and full-bodied. In the Napa Valley, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc dominate vineyard acreage. Sonoma County is best known for Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Rosé and Zinfandel. The Central Coast has carved out a niche with Rhône Blends based on Grenache and Syrah, while Mendocino has found success with cool climate varieties such as Pinot noir, Riesling and Gewürztraminer. With all the diversity that California wine has to offer, any wine lover will find something to get excited about here.

While Muscat comes in a wide range of styles from dry to sweet, still to sparkling and even fortified, it's safe to say it is always alluringly aromatic and delightful. The two most important versions are the noble, Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains, making wines of considerable quality and Muscat of Alexandria, thought to be a progeny of the former. Somm Secret—Pliny the Elder wrote in the 13th century of a sweet, perfumed grape variety so attractive to bees that he referred to it as uva apiana, or “grape of the bees.” Most likely, he was describing Muscat.
