Siduri Keefer Ranch Vineyard Pinot Noir 2014 Front Label
Siduri Keefer Ranch Vineyard Pinot Noir 2014 Front Label

Winemaker Notes

This Keefer Ranch Vineyard Pinot Noir offers an expansive range of spicy wild berry, savory herb, light oak and fresh earth flavors. Impressively balanced and focused. The Keefer Ranch Pinot Noir almost always produces one of our most forward and imminently quaffable Russian River Valley Pinot Noirs. In 2014, things proved a bit different as the wine produced from Keefer was atypically structured. For the first vintage ever, Siduri decided to keep the wine in barrel over harvest as we felt this additional time in barrel would make for an even more compelling wine. The final blend proved to be 35% Pommard Clone, 35% Clone 23, and 30% 777 clone.

Professional Ratings

  • 93
This crisp and lengthy vineyard-designate shows a depth of earth and rose petals against baked plum, orange zest and rhubarb. Mouthfilling acidity provides a freshness on the palate that persists through a long, spicy finish.

While the Russian River Valley is a large appellation with multiple climate zones and soil types, it is best known for cool-climate varieties, with Pinot Noir as the most celebrated. The grapes benefit from a reliable late afternoon flow of Pacific Ocean fog through the Petaluma Gap and along the Russian River Valley that ensures slow and steady ripening and the preservation of grape acidity. Today many of California’s most highly regarded Pinot Noir vineyards are in the Russian River Valley, along with its sub-appellation, Green Valley.

Historically Russian River Valley Pinot Noirs had bright red fruit and delicate earthy, mineral notes. But changes in viticultural and winemaking practices have led to stylistic changes in some of the region’s wines. Adjustments to canopy management, among other techniques, have resulted in riper fruit and bolder wines as well. These show flavors of black cherry, blackberry, cola, spice and darker, loamy earth tones, accenting traditional Pinot Noir notes of strawberry, raspberry and light cherry.
