Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

While Sante Arcangeli has become known for quiet restraint in their mountain-grown Chardonnay, sometimes it's fun to let a voluptuous blonde dance on the table tops at your party. She's fruit-driven with a silky body on the mid-palate, but not a fruit bomb or oak bomb: Vivid Kiwi and Fuji apple with subtle passionfruit notes greet you up front, alongside a softer underside of creme brulee and caramel.

Professional Ratings

From nearly 30-year-old vines planted at 1,700 feet, this very balanced wine begins with an excellent nose of citrus blossoms, lime rinds, salted cream and a touch of popcorn. The sharply focused palate rides a racy line of lime zest with flashes of tangerine and lemon and a creamy character on the edge, mouthwatering throughout the sip.

Sante Arcangeli, California
Sante Arcangeli Winery Image
Sante Arcangeli was the name of John Benedetti's, owner/winemaker, great grandfather. He died in 1934 at the very young age of 47, but not before fathering 3 remarkable children and building an historic business on the north coast of California, in the small farming town of Pescadero.

John named the winery after his great grandfather as a means of honoring all those in my family who came before and provided him the tools to do what he loves to do. John says, "Having taught myself to brew beer in my late teens/early 20s, I segued to wine in my mid-30s after many years of successful and creative brewing, with the help of Ryan Beauregard ,the Brassfield family, and James MacPhail, all of whom acted in varying capacities as friends, mentors and teachers. It started as a hobby. Now it’s a hobby gone haywire. My first barrel of wine was pinot noir, fermented with native yeast, from a very rare Santa Cruz Mountains vineyard. Jumped right into the deep end of the pool, with a goal to make delicate, layered, nuanced pinot noir and chardonnay in Santa Cruz."

One of the most popular and versatile white wine grapes, Chardonnay offers a wide range of flavors and styles depending on where it is grown and how it is made. While it tends to flourish in most environments, Chardonnay from its Burgundian homeland produces some of the most remarkable and longest lived examples. California produces both oaky, buttery styles and leaner, European-inspired wines. Somm Secret—The Burgundian subregion of Chablis, while typically using older oak barrels, produces a bright style similar to the unoaked style. Anyone who doesn't like oaky Chardonnay would likely enjoy Chablis.

A rugged and topographically diverse cool-climate appellation with a rich history, the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA stretches from Half Moon Bay, just south of San Francisco, to the northern border of Monterey County. Elevations range from 800 feet to upwards of 3,000 and microclimates vary substantially depending on which side of the mountains the vineyards lie; cool ocean winds and fog play an important role here. This can be a challenging region in which to grow grapes, but it is well worth the effort. Santa Cruz Mountains wines are noted for balanced acidity levels, often showing great aging potential. Wine has been made here since the 1800s, most notably from the legendary Ridge Vineyards, whose Monte Bello vineyard garners international admiration.

Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon are the stars of this region, while Merlot and Zinfandel also perform quite well. Organic and sustainable vineyard practices are becoming increasingly common.
