Winemaker Notes

Roth Sauvignon Blanc is an expression of its Alexander Valley origins. The debut 2009 vintage has distinct tropical characters with fragrant lychee and lively pineapple flavors. Our winery has added this classic Bordeaux white to compliment our tradition and focus on making elegant Bordeaux inspired Cabernets. While our Cabernet is sourced from the southern hillsides of Alexander Valley, our Sauvignon Blanc was sourced from top quality vineyards in the central and northern portion of Alexander Valley, along the meanders of the Russian River. To maintain the brightness and delicate flavors, the wine was aged exclusively in stainless steel.

We will admit that there is a somewhat direct quality to this one, but if grasses and weeds, herbs and leaves are your Sauvignon Blanc thing, then you will find lots to like because those singular notes are quite handsomely and convincingly backed up by fruit that is redolent of sweet lemons, figs and melons. Supple at the front, firmed up nicely at the back and long and continuous, the wine offers depth, vitality and focus at a great price.

Capable of a vast array of styles, Sauvignon Blanc is a crisp, refreshing variety that equally reflects both terroir and varietal character. Though it can vary depending on where it is grown, a couple of commonalities always exist—namely, zesty acidity and intense aromatics. This variety is of French provenance. Somm Secret—Along with Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc is a proud parent of Cabernet Sauvignon. That green bell pepper aroma that all three varieties share is no coincidence—it comes from a high concentration of pyrazines (herbaceous aromatic compounds) inherent to each member of the family.

Nearly a northern extension of Napa Valley, Alexander Valley starts just north of the small, Knights Valley, and is just a few minutes drive from the Napa town of Calistoga. It is Sonoma County’s hottest AVA. But the Russian River, which runs through the valley, creates cooler pockets and its soft, alluvial soil is ideal for grape growing, especially Cabernet Sauvignon. In fact, some believe that Alexander Valley Cabernets truly rival the best from Napa Valley and many of the heavy-hitter producers have largely invested here.

In addition to Cabernet Sauvignon, which makes up over 50% of plantings, Merlot and old vine Zinfandel thrive here. Ample, fleshy Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc dominate white wine production. Some old-vine plantings of Grenache have also been discovered and more recent experiments with Sangiovese and Barbera show great promise.
